Dual Mass Vibration ?

The 97 F-250 PSD has developed a bad vibration with no loss of power or other bad charecteristics, It has 125k on the factory clutch and I've known its going to need a clutch soon but now this vibration just started yesterday and I know the truck has a dual mass flywheel, could this be the cause of the problem, I talked to a guy and he did a code scan for me and he thinks its the injectors but I think i should have felt power drop off slowly and it didnt, any opinions on what I should replace the dual mass flywheel with besides another dual mass ? I want to use a centerforce dual friction clutch on it as the truck gets used hard and pulls heavy equipment

Dual Mass Vibration ?

if you are talking about the motor only (vibrating) my first guess would be timing is incorrect i doubt the clutch or trans. is bad, my 96 had around 190k on it before it needed a clutch.and i haul horse trailers (2) at a time (empty) from okc to dallas and back at 80 mph for a mfg. company.

Dual Mass Vibration ?

Beleieve it or not, bad injectors are a known problem for killing dual mass flywheels. As for suggestions on replacement, the Luk upgrade is a tremendous unit. On your application it will increase torque capacity by as much as 20% yet give you a much smoother pedal. It will also replace the dmfw with a smfw reducing future costs when another clutch job is needed. I have sold over 1700 of these units in these heaviest of applications from rollbacks, car haulers, power company fleets which hauls all sorts of heavy equipment with nothing but high praise. Email me at tkw636190@cs.com if you would like any additional info on the 7.3 diesel upgrade kits. It is both cost effective and very durable.

Dual Mass Vibration ?

Keep in mind that the dual mass flywheel was used to reduce gear noise from the transmission and the single mass flywheel will increase gear noise to some extent.

Dual Mass Vibration ?

Otto: If your friend has a genuine scan tool that Ford uses to run the diagnostic routines, it has a built in feature to run a cylinder contribution test (balance test) and if this scan tool has indicated, through the use of a balance test, that one or more of the cylinders are not contributing as much as the others then I believe that you have found the problem. If, on the other hand, your friend has only retrived the stored codes in the computer, then I suggest you take it either to Ford or to someone who has the proper diagnostic equipment to determine if the engine is running properly. If the engine is running properly then your dual mass flywheel has crapped out on you.

Dual Mass Vibration ?

LAST EDITED ON 16-Sep-01 AT 03:06 PM (EST)[p]I also experienced engine vibration at various RPMs. At idle, truck would shake with tranny in neutral and clutch engaged. I was told by FORD... locally... that it was an internal problem with the engine, probably engine had cavitation problems. Since the clutch was failing, I ordered a new clutch kit, installed it, and much to my surprise, all of the shaking and clunking were gone. Vibration is very low now.

Amazing... My engine was fine all the time and not suffering from cavitation problems. Looks like FORD wanted to take a shot in the dark method of repair at my expense.

The DualMassFlywheel was distroyed internally. Springs were all collapsed, and nearly warn in two. The two massed could be turned independant of the other at more than an inch on the outside.

I like the solid flywheel. It is a very big improvement.

One more thing. There is a little more gear noise or something as noted by one of the other postings. I can live with that.
