engine braking 2001 f250 diesel autotransmission

on steep hills, shift autotrans into 2 and engine goes to idle. and gives no engine braking. Ford claims that the a grove in the trans is allowing a clip ring to come off. replaced with new deisgn. Problem has occured 4 times. Ford claimes this is a common problem, yet no fourm site a similar problem. Has anyone had a similar problem? In 15000 mi truck is in for 4th transmission overhall.

I have the same problem with my 1999 F350. No engine braking in 2nd or 1st - the truck just goes to idle. I only get engine braking in OD down to 35 MPH. I was told this was 'NORMAL', but I find that hard to believe.

I have found that if the truck goes to idle in second, down hill, if I rev up, the engine will stay spooled up, and engine braking occurs.

Ford has a fix for the cost clutch failure available only after Oct 12. Even 2002 trucks produced before that date will have the problem according to ford regional rep.
Earlier report by BlueOvalNews said that when this happens trans can be damaged.
