im about to do the exahust on my 1948 flathead v8.
any ideas? i was thinking of doing something that sounded nice...

The stock configuration is about the quietest you can come up with.

I run duals - straight pipes with Smitty's located toward the rear of the cab. Conversation in the cab is easy. At low rpms you get the burble and rumble that flatty's are known for, but the new ones are a little too quiet. Mine are 2 years old and are finally blown out enough (the fiberglass packing) that the sound is getting where it should be.

Straight unmuffled pipes that dump in front of the wheels or straight out the back are sweet, but can be deafening if you drive very far at all. Conversations in the cab are impossible at any rpms.

Some guys prefer the Mello-tone mufflers and I've heard good things about FlowMasters.

what are smitty's?
what im looking for is something that wont look out of place, yet will sound nice (lol basically i dont want a huge ricer muffler...)

 

Smitty's is how you say it. Smithy's is how you spell it. They're the traditional hotrod muffler from the 50's and still doing business today. They make a metal tube muffler that looks good on any flathead powered rig. I bought my last pair 2 years ago from Red Hamilton at Red's Headers in Fort Bragg, CA. They're online and great people to deal with. Smitty's are available in 22", 24" and 26" lengths. Shorter is louder, longer is quieter. Come in light metalic blue with 2" i/o tubes.

Guess I should say there has been one major change - old Smitty's were steel-packs and the new ones are fiberglass-packed.
