What mileage to get first oil change?

At what mileage do I need to change my oil for the first time. I read in the owners manual that it suggest's changing every 5,000. Would this include the very first change? I only drive the truck for about 14 miles a day, 1/2 highway, 1/2 city. I currently have about 2,700 miles on it.

My service guy at the dealer told me that I should get it changed at the first 1500 miles...I currently have 1400 so I am going to have it changed this weekend...Weather he is trying to get some money out of me I don't know??? But I trust him enough to get it done...

I had mine changed at 1,500 as well. Then at 5,000. Then 10,000 and now I am sticking to every 5,000 miles.

3k is a thing of the past. Advancements in engine & oil technology has resulted in oil that doesn't breakdown as fast and engines that don't abuse the oil so bad. I haven't been changing oil every 3k since the mid-90s. Even the owners manual say 'To hell with 3k!'. The little lady's bimmer goes 12-15k before it requires a change. Insanity!

The oil manufactures still want you to change it every 3k, otherwise they lose money! Oh, and don't change your oil tomorrow, maybe the prices will go down!

You need to change at every 3000 miles in "extreme climates" ... including hot, cold, dusty, etc...
That's what most service guides that I have read say.

Very true. Also work trucks that are constantly stop/go/pull/hauling should also be service more frequently (ie, 3k). For most of us that pull light-duty 5k is cool.

I just did my first at 2000 miles. I think I'm going to go with 4000 intervals instead of 3000 like I've done for years. It's going to be hard to convince myself to go that extra 1K. Old habits are hard to break.

I change it when I freak out and realized it's been WAY too long and only when I'm near an oil change joint and I have the money on me...hehehe.

Now that motors are built by robots, the tolerances are perfect. Oil is just a link with the past. Witness the 5w-30 sewing machine oil that is specified for the new engines. Think about it, your suspension will fall apart before you need rings and bearings on one of these things.

I'm changing my factory oil at 1500, then on the suggested schedule. Old habits........

My fleet has different needs

I have a 2003 F150 with 5000 miles on it. I changed it at 500, and then today at 5000 with Motorcraft 5W20. I will continue to change at 5000 unless I see signs that the oil is used up.

My wifes chebby 3.4 L with 110K miles gets it from 4000-5000 with Motorcraft 10W30 he he GM .

My trail rig, a Bronco II gets it at 4000, but usually needs a make up qt during that span. It gets Motorcraft 10w30 now, on its 180K miles engine. This engine is a testimony to the fact that oil really dosn't matter to much as long as there is some in the sump. It has run some gas diluted stuff, any brand that I could find, but always a FL-1A filter. I take better care of it now than I did at 100K, it still runs like a top and gets 20 MPG.

I do think that first oil change is important. I think I changed the B2 at 3000K when it was born way back in 1988.

I changed mine the first time 2 days ago at 1800 miles. I plan to run regular Valvoline in it for the next 3K then switch to Mobil 1. I use my truck for work and carry a load, so I like to have good oil in it since I drive it every day, in all types of conditions. I also err on the side of caution when changin the oil (maybe more frequently than I should) Cheap insurance I figure.

Well, living down in Florida I will keep doing mine every 3k. Even though Ford says five, it still wont hurt any to do every three. Better safe than sorry right?
