Post AMSOIL BY-PASS OIL FILTER

I am thinking about installing a AMSOIL by-pass filter in my 2002 F-350/PowerStroke Deisel.

Does anyone have any experience with this filter system? If so, what kind of oil are you using, mineral or synthetic? I am wondering how good AMSOIL synthetic motor oil is, compared to MOBIL1.

In regards to synthetic oil, how many miles between oil changes is the average, using the AMSOIL by-pass filter?

AMSOIL BY-PASS OIL FILTER

I have ~95000 miles so far and have the dual by-pass system and run the Amsoil Series 3000. I've been using this stuff for approximately 70,000 miles or so. I have personally run this oil for 16,500 miles while changing both filters every 5000 - 6000 miles. My plan was to continue with the same oil until the oil tests' said to change, but it didn't work like that (My truck went into the shop and the Ford mechanic placed 4 quarts of Rotella on top of my Amsoil while installing (2) high pressure oil pumps -its a long story). I like the idea of testing my oil. I can watch for fuel, anti-freeze,or high metal wear - without turning a wrench.

As some guys will probably post, this oil does cost some money. But if you can make extended oil changes with regular filter changes and conduct tests on the oil - you know how your engine is wearing. The most impressive thing for me was the cold start-ups. Of course I live in South Texas and its not that cold, but when it did get to 25 degrees my truck started so easy as compared to Rotella I was using. Not to mention the increase in fuel mileage.

I do not claim to be an expert, but there are two reasons to change your oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles. One, it reacts with oxygen and other components of the combustion process and loses its lubricating properties and turns into sludge (hence the 3 month time period). The other is simply it gets dirty (3,000 mile marker).

I use the synthetics because I'm told they don't "break down" like standard oil and if you keep the oil filtered and clean you can run it for extended periods. Sometimes I push my truck hard (32' gooseneck 12,000 lbs of equipment and I run a chip with light amounts of propane)and I'm willing to do a little extra to make it to 400,000 miles.

My experience so far is it starts easy, it gets better fuel mileage, the oil stays clean, the engine stays clean (you should see the bottom portion of my dip stick)-hey no wise cracks, and finally you can analyized the oil and monitor any engine wear. I'm a performance nut and this system really perform for me.

AMSOIL BY-PASS OIL FILTER

I have a Ford F-350 SuperDuty/powerstroke diesel. The filter set-up, which includes both oil filters, costs about $240.00. If you use Amsoil Series 3000 synthetic oil, the oil will cost about $120.00.

If you can get 15,000 to 20,000 miles between oil changes, including changing the oil filters at the recommended intervals, I feel the BY-Pass filter is worth the investment!

I have been told that you must have a periodic oil analysis done to your oil, to make sure the oil is not contaminated.

AMSOIL BY-PASS OIL FILTER

Torch,
Are you using the dual remote oil filtration mount with spin on connection at the filter mount, or do you tap into the high pressure oil coming from the cooler?

AMSOIL BY-PASS OIL FILTER

Be careful with the PSD and the "bypass dual filter system" on the PSD. I run them on all my vehicles EXCEPT the PSD and in that I run the Amzoil single filter and 5W-30 HD Deisel oil. The reason are many BUT the main ones are the newer PSDs keep far more dirt inside and thus the system (not the oil) can't keep up. The Bypass system has show to lower the life of the injectors (AMZOILS own tests.) I change my oil at 20,000 with a filter change at 10,000. This is just my opinion I maybe wrong. I have used AMZOIL for many many years...great stuff.

AMSOIL BY-PASS OIL FILTER

The system is made by AMZOIL and is one precision set-up. It comes with a cap that replaces the standard oil filter. On this cap is an in and out line where you attach hoses to run to a remote site of your choosing and then attach to a receiver designed to accept the two filters (one standard AMZOIL and one bypass.) Works very well (I have 2 on other cars) but won't use it on the PSD. In that area I simple use the standard AMZOIL filter and AMZOIL 5W-30 for a 20,000 mile run and change the filter at 10,000. AMZOIL themselves have shown it may NOT be the best idea on a PSD or any other deisel for all that goes.....way too many variables in the operation of a deisel including operation of the injectors.

AMSOIL BY-PASS OIL FILTER

Russ,
Thank you for the great advice. I had no clue that you should not use a By-Pass filtration system with the PSD. I am almost possitive I will use Amsoil 5w-30 syth. oil, and an Amsoil oil filter.

Just one question. Do you have an oil analysis done on your oil? If so, which lab do you use, and how often do you have a test done.
