Well I'm thinking pending codes, that haven't set a MIL.

When I scanned my 94 Taurus that had up & down shifting problems, no MIL was set.

Scanner picked up a bad VSS & a problem with my vapor cannister purge solenoid I didn't know I had.

Who knows, you might get lucky & find something that'll pinpoint your problem.

Will only cost you a little time to find out.

Bassguy,
Did you check to see if the cable the drive gear drives is still in 1 peice? If you've got long enough arms or sum duct tape you can do it on your own, Attach a drill to the gear (careful not to crush the gear it is plastic) and if arms are long enough pull trigger, if not wrap trigger with tape, and see if speedo works. That's the best idea I'ev got.

check the fuse in your fuse block. the speedometer is controlled by the GEM module. you dome light also wont work if the fise is blown.
