94.5 PSD - Remove engine to replace O.P. gasket??

Hi -
I noticed I recently started losing oil through a leak. A mechanic told me that the oil pan gasket was leaking and the engine had to be pulled, to the tune of $1400.00!!!! I called around, and others seem to say things from the oil pan gasket wouldn't leak, to yep- engine comes out on that one. I can't really see where the leak is coming from, with the exception that it is caked around the starter and oil pan bottom.

Anyone know of a different route to get this fixed??

Thanks!!

Before I dropped $1400 I think I might try degreasing it real good to see if that was the leak, or only leak. Depending on how bad it was, I would try to live with it.

I recently thought my pan was leaking too, because I noticed oil caked up around the starter area too. I would look for a leak in the engine valley first, because where the drain hole is located in the engine valley allows oil to run down the back of the motor near the starter, and it looks like a rear main has gone out or the pan gasket when really it coming from on top. This is what I did: 1. Parked on a hill with vehicle facing uphill, so cleaner will run out back of drain hole. 2. Get some Brake-Kleen and spray the **** out of the engine valley. Pull the clutch inspection plate and spray in there also to clean out the oil residue. Likely if you can see it caked up around the starter on the outside, imagine what it looks like inside. Once it is all clean re-evaluate where the leak is coming from. Check near the bottom of the fuel bowl in the engine valley, look near the fuel pump also, could be a gasket or oring leak from EBPV acutator rod. Good Luck hope its not the pan.
