Is there a way you can have an old flash reinstalled? Maybe someone with a tuner that saved their stock program?

If you can see if someone else's tuner can put an old stock program back in to get your mileage back at least.

Do not buy a chip or tuner to fix the problem with the truck. No matter what Ford says the crappy mileage (and other problems) are not normal. Get those fixed. You paid for a working truck and should have one with stock parts. If they fail to do this get a Dodge cummings. Maybe when Ford starts loosing their customers they will rethink their customer service strategy. I hate when a good company goes to crap and Ford is heading that way. It does not bother me that the engine may have problems as long as the company backs their product up and does what is right.

/end rant

You're smart to have asked the question. You may end up with a good motor or you may get one of the all to common bad ones. The negative feedback should raise some red flags, though. None of us that spent the big $$'s on these trucks wants to be unhappy with them but the least we can do is try to keep others from making the same mistake.

Ultimately all you can do is collect the data you have asked for and then make your decision.
If you are looking for this to sway you one way or another it will not.

Keep it in perspective. Most of the people on these boards are here because they have some kind of problem or issue and are seeking help. The rest of the people that own these trucks are out driving them around and don't have time to hang out reading BBS.

Do the math. The Number of people with issues posted on these boards vs the number of trucks you see on the road. It is very disproportionate.

Look for a PSD club in your area and ask them. They might be able to help you in your decision.

Good luck!

No I am not having problems other than I hate to hear about how Ford is treating some of the guys here. They teach in us in school about backing up your product, customer is always right, customer service will get more word of mouth referrals and loyalty than advertising, etc and yet Ford have left a bunch here in a lurch when even my 2 year old son can tell it is the product at fault not the driver. I used to be a die hard Ford fan but I am having a harder and harder time recommending Ford to my friends.

Don't get discouraged. You will find after a while that the people with problems are few, just really noisy on this forum. I have found that everyone with a problem gets it fixed or replaced, eventually. Ford has a proceedure that they go through so that everyone who has buyers remorse and is trying to unload a payment doesn't stiff them.
Most of the service problems are caused by a few poor dealers with untrained staff. We point out who those are so folks don't buy from them.
Enjoy your truck. Chances are you won't have any trouble. The trucks really are great trucks compared to other brands. Your friends will like them too.

Chevy is not a bad truck but I have heard their tranny can have more issues than Ford when modifications are done to it. My Diesel Tuner out here will no put certain chips into the Chevy for that reason. I actually looked at one before buying my 09/03 build '04 F350 and have not regretted it since. Also, no problems or issues.

Ryan,

I took about 6 months researching Ford before I bought my '04. I am totally happy with mine. I read a bunch here, but I also talked to owners. Whenever I saw a F-250/350 with a PSD I would talk to the owner and ask how they liked their truck, serviceability, etc... You might try this also, I got a lot of positive feedback from actual owners and it definitely helped played a role in my decision. Very glad I bought now...Deac

BOB
The buyers remorse comment and the few bad dealers is a bit of a stretch, most people with problems are just tired of getting the run around from ford. Also it appears there are few good 6.0 repair shops. And in many cases ford itself just doesnt know what to do to fix these 6.0 engines.

Just so you don't have only negative feedback, I'm happy that I did (knock on wood). 1,500 miles (only), getting up to 18.5 MPG highway, 16 MPG city, lots of power and tows like nothing's back there. I do have a squeaky serpentine belt, but am getting that fixed tomorrow and that's really minor stuff compared to problems I've had even on previous new Fords.
