I'm currently getting 17 mpg on my 04/04 build truck. But I only have 900 miles on it, so I expect that to get better. Personally, I'd stick with an 04 engine.

Do you know if all trucks with the build date 10/03 found on the drivers side door are 03 motors or are some 04 motors. Another memeber has anlready infromed me on how to find out if the motor is an 04 by looking for the ICP in the engine.

On the 03, I got about 17.5 on the highway At 72mph. On the 04, I've averaged about 16.0 under the same conditions and seems to be improving. Both trucks are bone stock 4x4s with shift on the fly. The 04 is the Harley edition, so it has 18 inch wheels and tires. Don't know if that makes any difference.

Ryan, that I do not know. It'd be best to look at the actual truck and check the build date of the engine.

I belive a 10.03 motor is considered an 04. Sept 03 is when the new 04 motors were being put in the trucks. I have an 04/04 built 11/18/03 and love it. I have had 2 problems with it, neither of which were major, more annoyances than 'Problems' realy. I would ask for an Oasis report from the dealer before buying.

No I just meant people generally do not post if they do not have a problem just to say they are not having any problems so our perceptions may be a bit skewed because we see all the people who are posting their problems.

Oasis report is like a tracking record of all the services performed to your truck at a Ford dealership.
It is kept on a nationwide database so no matter where you go your vehicle is kept track of.

IE, if you go to multiple dealerships over a given time time period and then have an Oasis report run, it will come up with everything.

Mine is an 03 with 14,000 trouble free miles. I think the internet magnifies the problems.

jdadamsjr is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
As far as a 10/03 build date... I would JUMP on it...
Went back "home" for mommies day and surprise, my bro-in-law got a 6-oh FX4 Crew cab lariat !!!!
the build date was 10-03 - I GUESS that's the new 04 engine ????
not sure, all I know is that his idles and runs MUCH quieter than my May 03 engine !!!

MUCH, MUCH quieter !

he got his used cuz he's got a bud that sells fords...
one of his customers will buy a car/truck and keep it a few months and trade it !!! says this guy has done this about 10 times !!!
(what's that saying about money and brains :-) )

but anyway... the bro in law ALWAYS fallls on these deals !
already had the rhino spray in bedliner,
banks cat back exhaust, and LOT'S of other upgrades...
GE-O-RGEOUS truck and runs FINE without any chips/modules...
took him for a ride in mine and he went WHOA ! with the programmer !

but the most important upgrade I told him about was adding FTE to his favorites !!!)
