Hey guys I'm new to this site (i have a '99 f150 ext cab short bed, 4.2L) and this thread caught my eye so here i am. i have a question. first my goal for my truck is to have enough power to spin the tires at a dead stop. i have just put on a flowmaster 40 exhaust, i can feel the power increase but it hasnt reached my goal. back to my question, wut are some mod that would give me increase power but on a tight buget. thanx

I am getting ready to do a little bit to my '98 F-150 with 4.2l but I can say this for sure. I've had only minor problems with mine but going to Synthetic oil gave me 18.6mpg last weekend pushing it to Tennessee and 19.2mpg in the flat country up around Tiptonville to Jackson. I did some good time too. I have gone back to Wix filter and still have original airbox. Never had the ports cleaned but Seafoam did it's job apparently and only non original parts on the truck are brakes, alternator/battery and EGR valve. I'm gonna tune it soon though...maybe. I'm still running 87 octane only from Amoco...Oh, I've been getting a good 16mpg in and around town.

I'm considering adding a AIRMAX Spiral Flow Cold Air Intake with a K&N filter to my 2006. If I add this air induction system, do I also have to change the exhaust side? I've read in these forums if you increase the exhaust pipe size ( duel exhaust) hp and torque are in fact decreased unless you increase the air intake, so If you increase the air without balancing the exhaust side, do you gain anything? Do you even increase air intake with the same size exhaust?

Where to get the Diablo Sport Chip

If you go to www.diablosport.com and look at the top right corner it says 'where to buy' then just put in your zip code and it will give you the closest dealer to you. They run about $250-300 depending on if you get the two stage chip or one stage.

Diablosport chips rock!!! Have a 3 position chip burned for 87, 93, and E85!!!
Buy a K&N filter or intake system, Install a Dynomax exhaust, fill your tank with
50% Ethanol, click the 93 position on the chip, and hang on!! Or if you got the guts, fill the tank with 100% E85, click the chip to top position, and enjoy!!
If you have 3:08 gears, go with the 3:55's and have them burn that on the chip to so your speedo will be accurate. My 4.2 has lot's better pickup and more horsepower/torque than my carburated 1984 302 V-8.

I just want to throw this in here. I loved my 4.2 and it did good. When I tried to do more than Ford said it should I lost two great engines. Mine was a '97 and went throught the head gasket deal so I do understand that a bad thing happens. If you really want to up performance for anything but a "daily driver" or "toy" just go ahead and get a bigger engine. I went to a F-250ld and it does what I want, almost anyways. If you do some big towing on a more than occaisonal basis, get the diesel, period. I have had the 5.4 bog down harsh here. Just a word from some money and bad times. I haven't been on as much as I used to so don't take it the wrong way. Just went bigger till problems came along.

I agree....leave your 4.2 alone.

I made my post about adding an air intake quite awhile ago. My 150 with the 4.2 is a year old now, 12000 miles. I would have driven more, but 3 dollar gas make me a smarter driver. But, now, I would not add anything to this truck other than motorcraft 5/20 blended oil, a motorcraft oil filter, and a k and n air filter. I use all of these. The ford blended oil is highly rated, and winter starts....are great with it, the oil filter is also highly rated....have you ever used one of those mighty mike oil filters at the oil change shop, I wonder what they put in them. Enough cannot be said about a k n air filter. I'm cheap, its a great filter and I do not have to change it for a long time. No, I do not feel any power improvement, hell, the truck weighs 3000 plus pounds, how will I feel a couple of hourses. But my mpg sure improved over the last year, from 10mph last november to 16-18mpg city and 22-24 mph highway.
Had to get the alternator changed..................took 4 days for ford to change it#$#$#$#$#$ When I got the truck back, the ford mechanics took the truck to Burger King............how do i know, because they threw their trash in the back of the truck. That sure made me mad, I do not even throw trash in the back of the truck unless I would be hauling a load.
Great truck, dealers need lessions in customer care.

I have a 97 4.2 with 140,000, I installed the MAC cold air intake, as well as a power tower throttle body spacer. Also I have a Gibson Supertruck exhaust. I installed all at once 4 yrs. ago, and I noticed a lsight improvement in my mpg (1mpg at most), but it did make the truck quicker, and more responsive. Not too much lower end torque improvement.

My supertruck exhaust rusted out on me fter 4 yrs, surprising, but it does sound very nice on the truck.
