Question 51 Chrome Window Trim

I have a small portion of the window trim out of the grove on the truck. Is it possible to stick it back in?

I had this very same trim on my 52' F1 & yes you just push it back in place unless it is really damaged.

That chrome trim strip is used for 2 purposes:
1 = to add a little class to the window area.
2 = to help hold the seal in place because the windshield actually is installed from the inside out, if it did not have the chrom strip it would be just a black strip.

As far as I know you can't buy it new. How do you stick it back in?

If you was to replace the whole windshield seal "because most of them are rotted pretty bad any way" you can specify if you want the chrome strip or the black strip.

I got mine from Dennis Carpenter in Charlotte.

Once you have the seal in place with the windshield all you do is push the chrom strip in the grove of the seal between the windshield & the cab, when you get to the corner areas it can be a bit difficult but basically using a bit more force "if you may" to get those in place...

I got the trim in but cracked my original uncracked windshield right in front of the steering wheel.

Guys:

Believe you are incorrect about the method of windshield installation. The glass, seal & trim are assembled off the truck and installed from the OUTSIDE. How do I know this? Broke my own new glass attempting to install the trim after the glass was in place. The 2 piece windshield on 40's ford cars & it's associated trim pieces are installed in the same fashion. Hope this helps!

I have to agree with Jeff. I had to install the chrome strip on my '49 a few times (I know it belongs on a '51-52 Five Star cab but it sure looks nice on the '49). I put the windshield into the rubber first and then installed the chrome, leaving the little center seam clip off. It will take more than one person to do this as you have to follow the chrome strip around as the person inside pulls the string to seat the rubber into the windshield lip on the cab. After it is installed then you can install the seam clip.

Just a note, I lost the above mentioned seam clip and found that the "C" piece of chrome on the front of the hood has the same profile so I cut a 1" or so piece of a spare I had and used that. I looks like the original.

You can find the chrome on eBay every so ofter but be prepared, they usually go for over $150. I found a very straight one for my panel last year at a swapmeet. It was on a rusted out cab a guy was selling parts off of and I asked what he would take for it. He said $10, needless to say it was off in about ten seconds. You just have to look around, they're still out there and will be the last thing on the truck to rot out.

I appologise if I am wrong, I am only using info that one of the body shop guys at work told me about these windshields & the chrom strips, I even had him do the work for me because I was rebuilding his 351C for his Tbird..

He did do a great job on it tho & that is why I thought that what he had informed me was correct, again I am sorry if I am wrong...
