air ride shocks on 98 explorer

i currently own a 98 explorer and it has the air ride system on it and it is in need of new shocks i called the local ford dealership and they said that shocks would cost about $250.00 per axle. do you have to install special shocks because of the air ride system or can i go to sears and pick a set of monroes? any help would be much appreciated.

you can go with out the air ride shocks(they are ~$250.00 EACH) but you may need spacers. Explorerexpress.com has a kit that works well im told, it also lowers the vehicle height by 1.5 inches-which would improve handling. If you have the on board compuer display it will beep at you and tell you the air ride system is off-b/c you have to turn off the switch in the rear. I personally would find that annoying beyond all else. I bought the air ride shocks out of a wreck that only had a 5000 miles on the shocks for 300 for all 4. there are options but it will cost you.
