My dad's powerstroke is sick. It has a definate miss and the SES light comes on when it happens. I'm thinking it could be a bad glowplug because once the engine heats up it'll go away until it is allowed to idle or run at a slow speed. When I load the engine (I.E. up a hill in overdrive), once I hit the top and take the load off the engine, it'll quit missing and the SES will go off. It's like trying to start a cold gasser with no choke, you gotta play with the throttle to make the cylinder hit.....Anyone else have any ideas, I'm gonna try to have the codes read sometime soon, hopefully tommarow.
P.S. The oil was missing only two quarts (about 1200 miles 'till oil change time) and I topped it off just to make sure it wasn't that...and I have already ruled out bad diesel, two full tanks gone.

If your "service engine soon" light has been on then there is a code that has been set in the computer. You need to retrieve the codes from the computer and service the first one first. Your type of problem is the easiest to deal with because the computer tells you right where to look.
Well, I know know the problem, which is what I feared. The #7 injector has died. The truck is only 8290 miles outta engine warrenty. Oh well, I guess that's just how life goes.

I can (and will) check your serial number in our data base but it is unlikely that there is anything there that is pertainent to an engine with 108,000 miles on it. Your truck has the new style injectors in it, which surprises me that one has crapped out on you.
If you are going to change this yourself, be sure to drain the rail before you remove the injector. If you don't, you run the risk of hydra-locking the cylinder and bending the connecting rod.
Joe,
Do you have to drain both rails? (Fuel and HP oil)

Steve:
I've never done one in the truck before but I don't think so. Drain the H/P rail (after you remove the drain plugs you'll need to take out one of the cross drill plugs on top of the rail or it won't drain) and remove the lower injector bolt, push the injector clamp forward (toward the intake side of the head) and pry the injector up enough with a screw driver so that you can lift it right out. When you get ready to pull the injector out of the bore, have the new injector in your other hand and when you pull the old one out, stuff the new one in right away, that way you'll minimize the fluid entering the cylinder (we can change them at the plant that way without draining either rail but it is a lot easier working on the engine when it is not in the vehicle).
I checked your serial number in our data base and, as you indicated, it was built 3/11/99, went straight through the system with no defects. The horse power and other performance characteristics have all been down loaded to a system I don't have access to.
