Another stupid ?

I am wanting to make sure that the timing is accurate on my 69 360. I am going to get a timing light and just wondering what do I do from there. I know that you hook the light to the # 1 plug wire and mark the timing marks with a white marker but what other tips and advise can you give me.

Sorry for all the novice ?s

While you are getting a timing light buy a Haynes service manual for your truck. You may have to get one used. Those manuals show how to use some of the basic tools and how to perform basic maintenance procedures. If you want very detailed service information that is geared toward the professional mechanic get the OEM service manuals from the online store here.

As for doing it, you have the basics right.

As mentioned, a service manual will give you more information and tell you the tools needed for any job.

As for setting the timing, a 1/2" wrench will loosen the distributor, turning it clockwise will ADVANCE timing (say it is at 5 degrees and you want 10, rotate it CW). To RETARD turn it counterclockwise.

I think you're supposed to unhook your vacuum advance (diaphram on side of distributor), temporarily block the suction side to the carburator with tape, and set the timing while the idle is about 750 RPM. Am I right, people?????

You have vacuum on your ditributor, which will advance the timing. When you unhook your vacuum line you are setting your "Base Timing." That is the spec. in all the manuals. It is corrrect to un hook your vacuum line. Just make sure it moves the timing when you plug it back in, and it should also advance when you rev the motor. Good luck.
