Installing 92-96 Pwr Mirrors on 79 Truck

I'm retrofitting a set of 92-96 Power Mirrors onto a 1979 truck. Does anyone have access to the wiring diagram on for the 92-96 trucks to tell me which wires are which for the mirrors?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

I keep hearing rumors that you can go to your local library, and they subscribe to auto repair software that you can access for free(alldata?). I have been meaning to go check it out, but if you get there first, write back and tell us if it's worth messing with. If it does exist, and we are paying for it with our tax dollars, then let's use it. I hope it's not the same as whats on autozone's site though.

Do you have the wiring that was with the mirrors down to the door control panel and off of each mirror?. I believe it will help you determine the two wires that go to power and ground, all the others should match color wise from the mirrors to the door switch, just extend these as needed.

I put a set of these off of a 95 Bronco on my 94 F150, and it was pretty easy if you have all the wires that came with it. If you dont, let us know. I do have the book and I'll get it on Monday for you if no one else has it before then.

I'm starting from scratch here. I'm buying a set of new mirrors from NPD and they come with the 4 inch lead with a plug at the end. There are very few scrap yards in the Philly area and the few that I came across won't sell me the wiring without the whole door at $300+ a pair.

And then there's a scrap yard and hour and a half away, the claim to have a 92-96 truck, but they won't check for me to see if it has both doors or if it has wiring in it. "I'll have to go there and check for myself" according to them. Can't afford 4 hours out of my day on a chance there may be something there. Gotta love the customer service at these places!!!

If anyone has, or knows how I can get my hands on the factory wiring at a fair price, that would be a big help. Otherwise, I plan to fabricate all of the wiring. That's why I need to know which wires are which coming off the mirrors.

Also, since this is a 79 and there were never any provisions for power mirrors, I need to use a switch that is not was not integrated into a door panel or switch cluster. So far the switch from a Ford Focus/Contour/Mystique seems like it will fit the bill and they are plentifull on eBay.

Thanks in advance.

Right power mirror: two wires, Purple controls the up/down function and connects to #5 on the power mirror switch on a 94, Dark Green controls the L/R function, pin 7 on switch

Left Mirror: Dark Blue UP/down pin 6, Red L/R pin 8,

yellow:from both mirrors is tied together and brought to pin 3 on mirror switch.

switch: two wires left and these are Black for ground and light green with a yellow stripe for your 12v switched power

Thats it, its easy to just make your own wires up for running these leads.

Have fun, its a pretty quick job.

Thanks man!!! This is a HUGE help.

Now all I need to do is map these to the wire on the Focus switch.

One more question: do I really need to run this to a switched source? Can't I run it with constant power if I have an inline fuse?

Thanks again,
Mike

I am sure you could run these to a constant power source, but if you put it on a switched source with the key, it will be one less possible source of a battery drain if something failed.

Franklins right on the money there. It's not anything that you'll really need in a "key Off" situation for the most part.

You might be able to find a "on line" junkyard to get a switch assembly out of a 92-96 F150 or Bronco along with the plug with a short run of the wires, check some of them out during the week and see.

Good Luck!

What's the correct of tying into a switched power source? I don't want to burn any wires up.

I've seen the mickey mouse way of jamming a blade connector into the fuse box--don't want to go there. All of the wiring I've done to date has involved direct power and wire harness adapters.

Thanks again,
Mike

I always use uninsulated connectors, crimped and soldered, heat shrink over that and then you can use a layer of good qulity eletrical tape, not the 10 roll for 3 bucks stuff. Forking out 3-4 bones for good tape that wont come off with temperature extremes is well worth it. If your running the wiring through any metal, always grommet it. Any posible abrasion and putting it into a nylon loom will give another good measure of protection along with looking stock.

Thanks for everyone's assistance and $.02. I figured out the schematics, tested them, and got the switch installed. Got dark before I could get the mirrors on the doors.

Search on "'96 electric mirrors on my '78" in the forums for where I posted the Focus Switch to Ford wire mapping. Picture of the Focus switch installed is in my gallery.
