7.3 diesel normal oil consumption.

What is considered normal oil consumption between oil changes on a 2000 SD 7.3? I have heard many numbers and wanted to know what is correct according to Ford.

What is correct according to Ford and what is correct are two different things. If your truck isn't exceeding a quart every 800 miles, Ford won't do much about it. Normal oil consumption is a quart every 1500 miles or less. Some people don't use any oil and others are at the "add" mark (2 Qt.) at oil change time.

7.3 diesel normal oil consumption.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Aug-02 AT 03:59 PM (EST)]I'm not much help here, but this is how my 01 PSD operates.
I used the break in oil for the first 1000 miles, then switched to Shell Rotella T and used the Motorcraft filter. I changed oil and filter every 3000 miles, ran the crap out of it and it used no oil between oil changes. When I say it used no oil, I mean not enough that I have to add any. My engine only has 20k on it so it is hardly broken in. Not sure exactly why, maybe looking at some of the others and what they are doing, I don't know, but just today I switched to the synthetic Shell Rotella T and plan on running it 5k miles with a filter change in the middle around 2500.

I have a 99 f250 psd , with about 61,000 and normally i'll put in a qt. or so between changes every 5,000 miles......I use Rotella (4 gallons) and a wix filter----some may say that 5k is too long between changes but considering that the truckers go between 12 and 20 k I feel good about 5k--------I saw the new SYN Rotella but it was 13 agallon in wal-mart , so that is too much money to pay for oil every 5k miles--at least for my budget , besides I'm trying to save up for that new clutch that everybody says I'll have to put in between 70 to 90k-----does anybody know what that situation will cost me just out of couriosity?????fd

I have a 2001 PSD and after the first 3000 miles I checked it and it was almost to the add mark so I just Changed it. Then I checked it regularly but ran it around 9000 more miles and it didn't use hardly any! Everybody says change it every 3000 miles but I don't, I said as much oil as it holds, just to be riding in it, it wasn't hurting to be changed at least every 6-10000 miles! thats just my .02. Now if I was pulling it hard like pulling a trailer everyday running it around 75 mph yeah I would say change it every 3-5000 miles! But all I do is ride in it to work! But don't go on what I say!

Thanks to all for your input. My 99 PSD CC, 65000 miles, is using approximately 4 quarts every 5000 miles. My 2000 PSD CC 55000 miles, is using only 1 quart per 5000 miles. As Joe says what is normal according to Ford is somewhat high to me. My older Ford diesels I have owned did not use this much oil even with 300,000 miles on the engine. Makes me a little nervous about Fords quality in the engine. When we all fork over 5K to have a diesel I would expect a near perfect engine, even though anything mechanical will not be this way. Just my .02 worth of thought.

Thanks.

My 2002 PSD has 13,000 miles, and so far has not needed any oil between changes. (no help to you....sorry)

Bill W.:
Without going into detail in airing our dirty laundry (we've got morons at the helm), suffice it to say we had some problems with the surface finish of the cylinder bores some time back which resulted in higher than normal oil consumption. Send me your engine serial number and I'll see if yours is in that approximate range.

It should be on a label toward the front of the drivers side valve cover. If that label is gone it is on the pad that the rear oil cooler bolts to (on the block above the oil filter).

It's been a while but I ran a fleet of ambulances with most being diesel (older 7.3 and a few 6.9).
We changed the oil every 5,000 and never had any problems.
One unit had 100,000 miles on it after one year of use.
I do not remember any of the 35 units that needed oil between changes.
They were a couple of the older gas engines that needed much oil but they were 460 with 220,000 miles on them.

Hey, Joe. Is there "break in" oil added at the plant? I usually change my oil in new engines at 1000 miles. I will run Rotella T in my new PSD. I planned to wait until first oil change to do it, but if there is a "break in" oil from Navistar, I would like to change it over ASAP. My '02 PSD now has a whopping 1600 miles on her. It is running pretty darn good!!!!! Navistar does do a pretty good job at building 'em!

Bill W:
Your serial number is way before the cylinder surface finish problem we had. I don't know why your engine is using so much oil. Are you using a multi grade oil (10W30, 15W40, etc.)?
CEEJAY:
We use an oil with an anti scuff agent in the additive package for break in purposes.
