"Vehicle Not Responding" error

I have a 1989 F-150 4x4. The motor (302) was replaced with a 1996 302 but I'm not sure what it came out of. I cannot get the check engine light to go off and when hooked up to a diagnostic computer, after typing in the VIN, I get "vehicle not responding" error. Any ideas?

If you are using the computer for the 1996 truck, you will need a scanner or code reader that is OBDII compliant. All vehicles sold in the US from 96 forward are OBDII. You can buy an inexpensive ($40) OBDII code reader from Harbor Freight Tools that will read and clear DTC's. I use one on my 96 F150, and it has already paid for itself twice.
