Make a small hook with a piece of sturdy wire (like a small coat hanger or large paper clip). The hook tool will have a small "u" at the end about 1/4" around. Use the hook to go around the back-side of each **** and push on the spring that is holding them in (pull the tool towards you)...they will pop right off. On the headlight switch you'll feel a small cutout on the back-side of the ****...that's where the spring is at it's highest...push there. The wiper one tends to come off easier.

Once you get them off and have a look you'll see how they work...

When you push in the small wire push the **** IN a little as you push the wire in. You have pulled on the **** and the small flexible tab of steel may be trying to dig into the shaft. By pushing in the **** as you push in the wire the bind you have put the holding tab in is released making the wire insertion easier.

Once you relieve the little locking tab the **** comes right off!

For my '84 f250 you had to push a release spring/pin from under the dash while pulling on the headlight ****. This would pop the whole shaft out with the ****, you then could use a cutoff piece of hangar to turn the lights off.
