Monster 78 F-150 4X4 is starting off with a positive reputation.
Exclamation Need your opinion on 94 F350 4x4 IDI

Ok the guy that lives across the street from me orderded a new F350 and he is going to sell his old F350 and hasnt decided on the price and I have first dibs on it. The truck is in very good shape. Its a Silver 94 F350 XLT regular cab long bed, 4x4 with a N/A IDI Diesel. The truck is in very good shape the only thing thats wrong with it is some of the paint is peeling off the hood (easily fixable). Is there any thing special that I should look for on it (motor trans, T-case, spots on body prone to rust. Im not super familiar with these trucks). The truck has always been gagaged and kept clean, and he is super particular about it. It has about 100K to 125K miles on it and has been maintained regulary. The reason I want it is because I graduate next year and I plan on going to a tech school in pa and my 99 2wd ranger sucks to take long trips in and it gets stuck in wet grass and wont move in the snow. So what do you think my neighbors truck is worth or what would you give for it?????

Only two areas of concern from me.
Did he use coolant addatives in it?
Does it have an A4OD automatic?

If the first answer is no, truck is worth book minus 4500.
If the answer to the second question is yes, book minus 3000.

4500 is for a new motor
3000 is for new tranny

I agree with Dave. The engine needs to have had its coolent serviced and the correct additive used along with the addition at the perscribed intervals otherwise cavitation will be an unwelcome guest. Also if the truck has a 5 speed manual the dual mass flywheed is probably ready to be replaced as the springs and rubber bumpers are probably shot by now. Having driven an IDI for some 380,000 miles, I would not do it again.

I went and talked to him today and found out its a 92 he said he always properly maintained the truck (oil coolant etc him and his brother have owned many diesels). The truck has 140K on it it is an automatic. The exterior of the truck has a few small rust bubles on the right rear wheel arch and the paint in general is dull and it would need a paint job IMO. The interior is very clean (he doesnt have kids). It has a newer 3" exhaust and the injection pump was rebuilt at 80K. Also it will need front U joints because he didnt use the 4x4 much and they are tight. KBB says the truck is woth $3500 does that seam reasonable?

This coolant problem is this something that only diesel engines have with there cooling systems or does this happen with all engines, because I know of people that never change there coolant and never have a problem until the vehicle gets alot of miles on it.

The diesel engine is much worse due to the 22.5+ to 1 compression.
The 7.3 is worse than the 6.9 because the cylinder walls are thinner.
The turbo'd motor is worst of all because of the huge pressures involved in the compression stroke.

If you can get that truck for 3500, I would say you stole it. Hope no gun is involved.
