Off-roading with an E4OD

How do I keep my E4OD from over-heating on long slow off-road hill climbs?

Jason what is a good aftermarket tranny cooler? Do they all come with electric fans or do you have to buy the fan seperate? I think i need a new tranny cooler because my tranny is burning fluid because I don't see it leaking any tranny fluid when it sits. One other stupid question does my truck have a E40D?

You can buy them with or without a fan. The bigger the GVWR is, the more it'll cool the fluid.. I'm not 100% sure, but if you have an automatic overdrive in '95, its probably an E4OD.

Also, depending on your mileage, it might be time for a rebuild, and the tranny is slipping.

Thanks Bremen242! Thats what I have. I took it two times to the tranny shop and they keep saying nothing is wrong with it. But one time it was down five quarts of tranny fluid! I don't see a leak so my guess it that it is burning off. The truck does have 175,000 miles on it and it does slip under load. Maybe I should take it to another tranny place and get another opinion. Maybe its time to put in a built C-6, but I do like the overdrive, it gets bad gas mileage as it is.

Check the fluid level in the transfer case. It's common for the seal between the tranny and t-case to go bad and let the atf leak into the t-case. If it's bad, the fluid level will be WAY over full.

How do you check the fluid level in the transfer case?

hey man. i just rebuilt my E4OD! and i think it had 175,000 when i pulled it! wierd... anyway, my problem was one of the clutch packs had lost all its teeth. it was just about a perfectly rounded disc! my advise would be to drop yur pan and check the magnet for metal shavings. then since u would have to put new fluid in anyways, might as well flush it...especially if the fluid was all burnt up before. are there any noises from yur tranny? or is it just shiftin funny and burnin fluid? when yur fluid is burnt up the tranny shifts at wierd rpms. its definately worth a look before u go takin apart yur tranny. trust me the e4od is the hardest tranny out there to rebuild. but it can be done hell i did it by myself (pretty good for a senior in highschool ) its just a pain in the tailgate good luck

I too have the E4OD. And it has been one of the biggest problems on my rig, since I owned my Bronco. Had it rebuilt twice in the past three years, due to bad build ups. Or shops that didn't know what they where doing. If you have a shop rebuild it, I suggest shopping around. Here are several places you could start with:
High impact = http://www.high-impact.net/
Brian's Truck Stop = http://brianstruckshop.com/
Midwest Torque Converters = http://www.raceconverters.com/
Baumann Engineering = http://www.baumannengineering.com/elect.htm

For the Tranny cooler, you could also try http://www.flex-a-lite.com/ and B&M also sells coolers. I recently installed something like a 24k GVW cooler on my rig, with NO fan, along with a tranny temp guage. Normal day to day driving the temp stays around 160 deg. When I go off road the temp starts climbing upto around 220 deg., maybe a little more. I am planning on getting an electric fan hooked up with a switch for the tranny cooler. So when I do go offroad I could flip the switch to turn on the fan for the tranny cooler

hey 95-F-350-4x4
On the back side of transfer case(rear drive shaft side), there are 2 square set screws. The lower one is to drain the oil and the upper one is to fill and check fluid.

Get the cooler then go to your local junkyard and pull a small electric fan off a compact front wheel drive car. This will save you a few bucks and it worked great for me. I have the same tranny and have had to rebuild it 5 times the truck has 336000 miles on it with the original motor. Also I have posted a similar forum before and one of the good Ideas that I was told was to put an external filter in-line. I plan to do this to mine also. This gives you probly another quart of fluid which is easier to keep cool.

Thanks guys for all your help and ideas! I'll get it fixed sooner or later, hopefully sooner than later because I would hate to be stranded, especially offroading! Its the first thing I need to fix thats for sure! I hate dumping money into the tranny though. Wish I could buy the lift and tires, oh well the joys of owning older trucks they cost you $$$$$$
