Bon - Ami, "The Treatment?"

All,
Has anyone ever used, Bon-Ami cleanser to try and get their motor to stop burning oil? I've got a partial restoration that has been reringed and will not sead. The 302 is using oil badly. Allegidly, bon-ami down the carb will cause the rings to seal. Has anyone heard of such madness?
Torn,
KingFisher

Have tried it, and can't say it helped. Can't say it didn't. Old time folks here swore by "bab bo", another abrassive like comet or ajax. Don't over do it.

My brother ruined a perfectly good 429 SCJ several years ago after listening to the 'old timers' and doing this. It can't be good for an engine and you can't ever get it out of the motor. It'll seat your rings alright and then wear out everything else, cylinder walls, bearings, cam...... Might as well just throw a handful of sand down the carb. My recomendation...don't do it to your engine.

The first time i heard of "such madness" I couldn't believe it either. But then i read that it was GM's (chevy's) cure for problematic oil consuption after they introduced their V8 back in 55.
But what was the life expectancy of a motor back then?
