VSS Signal Question

Vehicle is a 1999 Explorer. Looking for specific VSS signal information. What is the voltage step and frequency range for the VSS.

I would expect to see a voltage step of something like: 0-1V Low, 4-12 V High with a frequency range of 0-160 Hz. Trying to verify this information.

Plan is to tap into the stock VSS signal to drive an aftermarket survey odometer and not really excited about attempting to mount magnets and sensors on my drivetrain. I should be able to tap into the VSS signal either at the gearbox or off of the cruise control. I believe that I have already located the signal wire (Gray/Black wire)

Verification or correction of the information would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing my book says is:

"The two wires connected to it produce an alternating current sine wave, the frequency of which is directly proportional to the speed of the vehicle. Use an AC voltmeter to test it. Lift the drive wheels off the ground. Drop the transmission in drive(or second on a manual) and allow the drive wheels to idle. The sensor should put out 0.5 volt AC or more."

Cool, this is all good information.

Just to make sure I don't fry my system, would I connect the AC volt meter between the VSS signal wire and ground for the test?

Still trying to track down the frequency range. If the frequency range is too high, I will need to install a signal divider to cut the frequency by some value to bring the operating frequency into appropiate values for the odometer. Target input frequency is 0 - 200 Hz.
Thanks again.
