7.3w/ATS vs. Cummins

Just had a question to seddle an arguement between friends. Will a 91 7.3 with the ATS turbo out perform a stock 93 cummins? Both rigs are straight piped.

That's a tough one. Why don't you just go find a hill or hiway and find out, then we'll all know.

I think I could give any Dodge a run for its money with 3 or 4 tons on the back.

Tough call though because,
The inline 6 makes better torque than the same size V8, but the 7.3 V8 is a larger motor.
I work with a bunch of Dodges, they are all talk and no action.
They even have 6 speeds to my 4 speed and the only time they come round is when they know I am out of gear to go faster.

you have a good chance, but I would want more info such as gears, 2wd or 4wd, crewcab, xtra cab reg cab, same type trucks or drastically different, etc. I know I can't do it with my 7.3l turbo, cause I have a crewcab, 4x4 versus a 2wd reg cummins. the weight is in his favor. BUT go for it and see if you can blow his doors off.

I know what you mean Idaho. It depends on how well the guys who turbo'd the truck set it up. Is it a wastegated ATS? How far is the pump turned up? Did they A-time it a little bit? What kinda boost are you getting? I think if all is right you could take him. But you said out perform, we talking heads up 1/4 mile or pulling a pass with a load?

Both trucks are four wheel drive ex cabs with long beds. We both got a set of 285 tires. The AtS is wastegated. I havent decided yet how to put them to the test. I think the cummins would beat me on the quarter mile, but who cares about how fast a dies is off the line anyway. We have two empty six-horse trailers out back, load them up with an equal amount of firewood and give it hell.

Don't forget to weigh both rigs to be sure it is an even match.
Do you have a pyrometer and boost guage?
If so how much boost are you getting?
My ATS is putting out 15 pounds of boost and it leaves a light black smoke trail at wide open throttle.
That 2003 Dodge has a six speed?
What do you have?

The 7.3 is manual 5 speed, the dodge is manual as well, I beleive it is also a five speed. I dont have either a pyrometer or boost gauge but am planning on getting one.

I would not try to out pull him till you have a pyrometer.
I have a Reviva reman 7.3 turbo motor in my truck, at the Reviva injection pump fuel settings I can get EGT's that are to hot for the motor.

Running empty on the interstate at 65 up a WVa hill and nail the throttle, EGT 1100 degrees in about three minutes.

I would hate to see you hurt your motor just for bragging rights.
It is not worth it.

You can get him if your turbo and fuel are right.
