diesel fumes in cab

I have a 2003 F350 p/s and have fumes from the exhaust in cab with the ac on and off.The problem is not too major for me but my wife will not ride in the truck no more and says that she will not have our kids in the truck unless this is fixed. The major stink of this is that her father owns a 2002 diesel and does not have this problem. The last time the truck was at the dealer I had them check under the hood for any leaks and they found nothing. I bought a battery powered carbon detector tonight and I will try it out on the way to work. My question is that should I contact a ford rep about and file the the papers to buy the thing back?

Is your truck equipped with the 6.0 Powerstroke? Is her father's a 7.3? If so, then your fumes could be coming from the tube directly behind the turbo. It has a flexible mesh section that has been known to cause problems on the 2003 - 2004 6.0L, but no such tube is on the 7.3L, completely different systems, and no mesh.

Have the flex tube on the backside of the turbo checked. I complained about mine for 6 months. I took a copy of a thread from this web site that mentioned this flex tube. You got it, thats what they checked and indeed it was cracked. NO MORE FUMES for now. They have no update for it so it could fail again.

Did you guys also hear a hiss? I started hearing a hiss on the drivers side mostly coming from the bottom of the truck last week and started smelling exhaust fumes in the cab and on the left side of the engine.

Get out your flashlight and check the FIREWALL area behind the turbo downtubes for any black powdery residue that would indicate a leak. Leaks in this area can cause fumes and noises. A sharp whistling noise may be the stainless steel gasket at the downtube connection on the passenger side.

I have noticed it in the garage - does it smell kind of like burnt rubber? Then yesterday I had the vent on and the cab smelled the same. I picked up my wife and she said it smelled like a skunk in the cab, again it was kind of the same burnt rubber smell and I could smell it before she got in so I turned the controls to off and it went away. Never noticed it as much when the heater/defroster was being used but once in a while for a short period of time I could. No I haven't been turning the tires! Always been a Ford guy and sometimes I think these threads are inconsiderate of new products but since having the transmission worked on - the dealer getting something on the hood and buffing it out (looks like crap) and now the cab fumes, maybe some have legitimate bitches. I'm only in the first 500 miles on an 04/04 late January build and this is my first real diesel except my then new 1980 toyota pickup 4 banger that let a wrist pin go early in life.

same smell

I have 2,000 miles on my 04 and just started getting the skunk smell in the cab. Is the flex tube the only thing that can cause this? Is there a service bulliten out on this problem. The smell was really bad last night and the kids and wife were complaining. Only problem I've had with the truck so far and last night was the first time it became a real concern.

I had the skunk smell also for about the first 500 miles, it only smelled in the garage and it has since went away (1600 miles). As for diesel smell in the cab, I remember other posts that reiterated what UtahTom said, it turned out to be a leaky manifold.
