Talking Have 391 FT bought 390 F.E.

Found out I have a 391(d4te) with dt2eaa heads, r.v cam(204 int 214 ex) and eld intake.11 inch clutch and 1.375" crank snout, does this mean I have a 390 crank in a 391?. And will the clutch and pressure plate work on the new 390?It was in a 1975 3/4 4x4 and I spun a rod bearing. I just order the Jasper class II 390$$$$$$$ because I could not find a reliable builder of F.E. engines in wash state that could answer all my questions. My next question is can I use the same dist and oil pump shaft due to the fact that it had the eld intake to accomodate the height differences. The oil pump shaft looks like the smaller of the two between the F.E. and F.T. and does not have a lager bushing. Just a side note that the 391 with dt2eaa heads and r.v. cam pulled like a tractor but ran out breath at about 4,000 rpm and would ping if I did not use supreme gas.It should have had low CR, but with the 390 heads it might have boosted it a bit? Seemed to get pretty decent gas mileage with a carter 625. I really enjoyed this torque monster and can not wait for the Jasper 390 with 320 and 415# of torque. And now I can say I will be a true F.E. owner.

390 or 391

RV, you already had an FE. The D4TE casting, in and of itself, doesn't mean the you have an FT. Ford used many FT cylinderblocks in pickup trucks. Whether or not they had the bushing in the distributor hole depended on how completely they had been machined on the FT line. Some had bushings, some never were drilled enough to need them. Even on some of the ones that DO have a bushing, it is tough to see it if you don't know exactly what you are looking for. Since it was assembled with the smaller oil drive, and the D2TE-AA cylinderheads, its an FE. Do you still have the D4TE block ? Some of them are cast with thicker than average walls and are good candidates for a 428-style bore job.

yes I do. it is stamped .30 over and 20/20 on crank and like I said earlier it run strong and burned no oil. It will be the core exchange for the Jasper engine. and thanks to every one with all the help. I have learned so much here and have used so much information about my F.E. From porting heads, timing, I.D. the parts.

No I haven't, but I would like to on my next build. I spoke to dozen of machine shops in the North area which is Bellingham , Mt.Vernon( I live here 60 miles north of Seattle). And I fiinally chose a builder by the name of Mark huston. He mostly builds race motors for skagit speed way dirt track and He has experience in building F.E. engines 1600.00 basic to 2200.00 with upgrades. But at that time I didn't have the money or the time. And now it is the busy time of the season for him. I spoke with him and he is 6-8 weeks out before he could touch my motor. My loss. Thats when I decide to go with Jasper$$$. The cost for a basic rebuild on the net is 1500.00 and I pretty much looked at all of them for the last 1 1/2 year, including autozone, napa, Recon extreme which I almost bought for 2200.00. It had 330 h.p at 380 lbs of torque but they were hard to talk to and didn't answer my e-mail. But the worst feed back I received was from Rebuilt auto car engines www. engines which carry a 7 year/ 70,000 warranty,1575.00 with ARP rod bolts, R.V. cam 204 int 214 exh, doulbl roller timing chain and H.V. oil pump. I talked to several local mechanics about 390 coming out from this business and it was the worst and other engines were hit and missing. Mostly low pressure and bad valves. My brother-in-law bought their 460 and ran for two days and started knocking, they did replace it and now he is selling the whole dam truck for 800.00. He paid 1200.00+ for the engine it proable has 100 to 500 miles on it he just wants to get rid of it. Now for the all time best is the Egine Factory and Gessford and they are few others out their and just to let everyone know the engine factory will build you one for 2500.00 with some upgrades but the shipping seems a little high. Also I did talk to Jim Green and got several different quotes every time I called. They were my first choice. Thanks to all and I hope my experience searching for a rebuilt 390 helped someone. The reason why I choose Jasper was reputation and warranty and from everyone here on the forum and just about every mechanci I have talked to. I am not advertising Jasper becuase they are very expensive 3000.00+. I was lucky enough to have saved for the last year and I decide I deserved this my wife and kids have everything and this is my dream. Next year paint.

If you want to drive a little go to gray's automotive in portland. They do very good work. My dad still races an AMC 343 they built for him in 1971. They've built several race engines for me and the low end grunt 390 that's in my truck now. They are very reasonably priced and don't BS you. They offer a warranty if they put it together, but I've taken every engine they've built for me way past it's intended limits and never had a problem.
