in N but says R

I have an 2001 XLT V6. This problem seems to be getting worse. Trans selector says it is in reverse but car in in N. press gas motor just revs and you don't move. Is this just an adjustment i can do Or more complicated? Help please. Common problem?

stepman is starting off with a positive reputation.
If you look under the steering column, you should see a small plastic cable with a little wheel on it. It's attached to the column by one screw( white plastic piece). Turn the wheel and it will move the indicater. Problem with them is that with all that plastic the "ears like to break off. Sometimes they can be repaired with a zip-tie.

If stepman's solution doesn't work and it won't go in ANY selection, you may have lost your tranny. The CD4E tranny in the 2001 and early 2002s seem to be more likely to have tranny problems. This goes back to the Mazda 626 using the tranny in the 90's too.

I think I may have read that wrong. I was thinking it was just an indicater problem but, it may be something else. If that's the case, I would start by checking the fluid.
