Rebuild E40D or instal ZF 5 manual?

Well, my tranny is on it's way out. It made it to 280,000 km, but I think it is going to calve real soon. Yesterday, it went into fail safe mode (high pressure) and the OD light started flashing. I still have all gears, just harder shifts with the OD light flashing all the time. I took it into the dealer and the pulled code #62, which I was told was excessive slippage. I have had slippage in the past, and figured it was only a matter of time till the trany went, but I was hoping it would be longer. I talked to two mechanics at different shops. One said it was the torque converter, the other said that since I don't feel any shimming (like driving over washboard) it is slipping else where. They both agreed that putting a new coverter in may not be the best idea since I may have to redo the tranny at any given time. So my question to everyone is:

1) should I just redo the converter and hope for the best
2) spend the coin and redo the tranny
3) or look to put a ZF 5 in it if I can find one cheaper then the rebuild of the E40D.

I look forward to all the help I can get on this one. Thanks everyone.

I just had mine done and my tourqe converter had to be replaced trans was not sliping but it would realy rumble when it shifted you would think you were going over those rumble strips cost me 1420$ to have done I am going to have to get the shiftting points ajusted it likes to hold on to 2 gear right up to 3200 I think thats alittle high I think its costly to convert to standerd with haveing to get a clutch and flywheel and stuff

good luck

I have no rumbling or shimming at all when I shift, it is as smooth as it ever was. But I did notice when I was going 80-90 kph that it would sometimes do a little slip and I would rev a tad more, but then go back down again in a second. The more I think about it, the more I think that it isn't my torque converter, but something bigger. What does everyone think?

I thought E4OD's were supposed to have 100% lock-up? Just what I heard...

Go for the ZF, Itll last you longer. Dont do it if you dont like manuals or think it might get old...

Im 16 so a manual never gets old

I would love a manual, this is my first auto. I remember that there was a thread here in the past all about switching my rig over to standerd, but I have to keep looking for it. Has anyone done the conversion that can give me some help?

If it's worth spending more one time, instead of fixing the auto a couple times down the road then by all means start buying stick stuff. It will be a lot more unless you find a good deal on a donor truck.

I plan on keeping this truck for a long time, so I want something that will last me. Do you think I can get a manual tranny in there for the cost of getting my auto refitted? I got a quote today of $3000 (Canadian) to redo my trany. Can I instal a manual for this price? I know that alot of it will depend on the price that I pick up the second hand manual for, but what is the going price for a good second hand ZF5?

Way north of you. North west BC. Did you get your whole trany redone, or just a new converter put in? The guy I talked to has his own trany shop (the only one in town) and he said $3000 max to redo mine. The Ford dealer wanted $3000 for a remaned one then the $ to instal. If you got your whole tranny refitted for $1300, you got a steal. I am sure that nothing has been done with my trany since it was new, and a contracted owned it before me and haulled trailers with it. I think I should get an award for making it to 280,000 km before it kicked it in. So the $3000 max would include all the upgrades that they did to these things.

That is what I told my buddy, I am glad this is happing when I am close to town and not out in the boonies somewhere (well, I guess I kinda linve in the boonies). I have heard of alot of people having problems with these tranny's. I am kind of scared to put a new one in only to repeat the problems. This is why I was thinking of going standard if it wasn't to much of a problem. Thanks for the help. Get your elk?

I have an 87 f350. I had a c6 and just replaced it with a ZF. It actually went very smooth. I had to have the drive shaft cut. And I didnt replace the Automatic harness so the truck will try to start even if it is in gear but as long as I rember to put it in nutral or push in the clutch everything is good. I love the 5 speed.

my E4OD had over 134,000 on it,had a lag in reverse when i bought it,soon after it got much worse started turning the od light on and slam shifting, had a reman jasper unit installed for $3,000 U.S.have had good luck with it,i dont tow a trailer much, but she pushes a lot of snow.you should think about what you are going to do with the truck also.do tow or do anything that would be hard on an auto vs. the stick.
