I can't find an EGR valve gasket for my '73 400. Do I even need one, or is there some kind of subsitute?

 

Uhhhh...you can't find one, cuz they didn't make a '73 400? Assuming the engine came out of another vehicle, you should look for an egr gasket for that year vehicle. Failing that, you could try a, say, '77 400 truck EGR gasket.

Pardon? 400's went back to like 71. They started out in LTD's and Galaxie 500's. EGR was introduced around 1972.

 

400's started out in cars in 71, trucks did not use them until ~77. You have to help out the parts store clerks sometimes. Those computers are really dumb.

 

That's a darn good idea. I'm going to start asking for gaskets for a 79 F150, instead of a 73 Galaxie 500. I bet I'll have more luck.

 

Ah. Full-sized '73 Ford 400 uses Felpro 70826 or Borg-Warner EVG8.
79 F150 uses different numbers (Felpro 70020).
