6.9 fuel pump question

I just bought a 86 f-250 with the 6.9.
Can anyone tell me what the black plastic part on the top of the fuel pump is?
it has 2 vaccum lines going in to it. one of mine is cracked where the vaccum hose connects to. I am losing lots of vaccum there. can i just plug the line or do i need this part on there? Is it hard to change?

That is the Vacuum Regulator Valve or VRV. It sends vacuum to the transmission to tell it when to shift gears depending on throttle position. It is not hard to change but you might have to be creative if it has phillips head screws to get it out. Replace the screws with hex head to make it easier to adjust. There is a book adjustment procedure but I prefer to just set it to make the transmission shift how I like it.

If you are talking about the vacuum lines, that should be mounted just to the side of the injection pump. The rest is described by Birken above. Be careful how you reinstall it, there are tabs inside that match up to the throttle shaft. Easy fix.

Thank you for the information Birken and bilder12, at least now i know what it is and how to go about changing it. It is on the side of the pump.

Thanks again,

Jerry
