Y-block transmisions

transmissions
This is a little off subject, but here goes. My 292 with an estimated 260 HP is matched up to a 1946 Ford 3 speed truck tranny. Next year I plan to go the C-4 conversion route. Vehicle is 1946 Ford 1/2 ton, with weight of approximately 2800 lbs. Until I can go the C-4 route, how careful should I be not to explode the current 3 speed?

okay i have a T-18 in my truck and it is a very stong durable truck tranny. hover, it is not a user friendly tranny it is a pain in the *** to shift its loud and you cannot accerlate quicly with it. i do not reccomend it unless your are planning to pull unbeilvaly huge loads. i would recomnd a modern 5 speed like a ZF. i am planning my coversion to pull out that annyoing T-18!

<i>"The RUG was installed in some Ford cars in the late 70's and early 80's."
Which cars came with it? So I can hunt the junkyards.
Thanks</i>
The RUG was initially available in the late 60's muscle cars as a true 4 speed. It disappeared until around 1979 when it reappeared as an OD version in E & F 150's and was available thru 1985; maybe later as my newest Hollanders is an 85.
Since it was used behind the 6 cyl as well as 302/351 plus FE's the case is drilled to fit them all. The FE pattern is the same as the Y Block.
Mine came out of a 83 with a 300 six. Looks new inside.

I'm not sure about things such as spline count, input shaft length, pilot bushing, etc. After all it is a Ford and they had a bad habit of making little changes between models just to aggravate owners.
In any event there is nothing major involved other than selecting the proper all Ford parts to play together. Even trimming down an input shaft is no biggie; I sort of remember somone having to do this but it was a 55-7 type T Bird install and I dont know the original source of the RUG.
I would try and find a complete install anyway and grab everything clutch related, a few extra parts never hurts.

292/t98/t5
Hi guys, I'm a new guy, just registered, 'cause I just picked up a '48 F1 that had a 292 and a T98 truck four speed installed in it many years ago! It all still works great, but I'd like to put a T5 in it for better shifting and highway use.
So does anybody know if a T5 bolt up to my T98 bell housing?
Thanks for such a great site!

Rick, If you go ahead with your transmission plan, I would sure appreciate your posting the results, and how the application went. I have a Y in a 46 1/2 ton, which has I think the same type of clutch pedal and linkage as the 48. Am interested in upgrading tranny, but don't know about the clutch issue.
