It's not always posted at the pump, but higher cetane fuel runs a lot better.

I ALLWAYS buy my fuel from a truck stop. I have been driving Diesel trucks for over 15 years and learned a few things the hard way. When Diesel fuel sits in the ground tanks for a extended period of time, you tend to pump some water with the fuel. Buying fuel from a truck stop, the fuel tends to have a better turn over rate.

Wow, I just filled up tonight at $2.15 a gallon? The last fill up was at $1.80? We are really getting hosed here in California!

Yes you are. I buy diesel from Chevron at $1.55.9 here in Central Texas. Why is it that high in Ca? You don't have additives for emissions that you had to pay to put in and then pay to not put in like in gasoline. According to the Calif Air Resources Board, the 6.0L diesel in the Ford is a ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle). So why are you paying so much? If you pay a $1.00 a liter for filtered tap water, why wouldn't you pay for fuel. Do you know the last time I drove through Ca, the prices were that high only in LA, SF Bay area, along I-5 and othe big metro areas. Along the other less populated areas the prices were lower. So is it availability or shipping? I don't think so.
Get rid of the other money grubbing politicians you have in that screwed up state. BTW I am a 4th generation former Californian native. I couldn't take it anymore.

On the corner, Diesel is $2.11 and 87 gas is $2.15.. Just plain old gas gouging.. Since the Feds are getting 18 cents tax, Ca. gets another 18 cents and local gov. gets 7.75% tax, they're in no hurry to do something about the higher price.. We get most of our gas from Alaska & South America out here, so it's not OPEC doing it to us...this time..

Kinda off subject, but related to a couple of posts above me..

Couple weeks ago when I took my '03 F350 in for some warranty work, they did a cetane measurement of the diesel in my tank and said it was absolute garbage. I asked the mechanic who sells better diesel and where I should be buying it. He had no suggestions, basically said it's all garbage! I'm hoping Ford designed this engine to run on commonly available diesel, and not some exotic, perfect blend!

What part of the country are you in?? Why isn't the cetane level required on all pumps?? Does Stanadyne (sp?) raise the level any or just make it more reliable??

Thanks,

Russ

Russ, I'm up in the Seattle area. I haven't seen cetane ratings on the pumps. The dealer suggested Stanadyne, which I've since been using, but haven't seen noticable difference in performance (not that I had any complaint's with the trucks performance before using it, this truck hauls my toys like nobody's business!).

I've heard the same thing too. Based on some other posts - not sure where I saw them, was a guy from Colorodo I think. From what I understand your dealer is likely WRONG. It seems the dealers use a hydrometer or something like that to measure the cetane ratio. Its a real basic and simple test. He was gitting the run-around the dealer (told he had to spend hundreds to have his tank dropped and drained of bad fuel before they would work on the truck) for poor fuel being the cause of his problem and the dealer tested his fuel several times from several different sources and the cetane rate was in the low low 30's for all tests. API standards say cetane must be over 40.

As I understand it the fuel station can be held somewhat liable for such a charge hence in the end they sent the fuel out to a lab and what was testing at a dealer as cetene 32 came back from the lab as 45. Why the big difference??? I understand the equipment the dealers are using is old and the properties of diesel have recently change (LOW SULFER). Taking the sulfur out I understand screws up dealers quick test.....

Anyway, that's what I heard. I'm more likely to believe low cetane fuel is the exception not the rule. Dealers seem to overuse the excuse. Personally over 10 years of driving diesels I've never gotton a bad batch of fuel - not to say its not out there just not a widespread as one might think

Fuel Cost

Highway robbery! I guess I won't complain at $1.739 in Connecticut, although I've seen it at $1.879. It was in the $1.40 range in Nov 03 right after I purchased the truck. Where is the FLASH to give us improved mileage?

$1.40 today at the truck stop in Edmond, OK. So, no complaints here.
