PowerStroke Turbo Boost
I recently had the rear main seal redone on my '99 Powerstroke. The whole engine had to be removed. Now the turbo sounds different. Instead of a tight whistle it has an additional, more breathy sound like air is rushing out somewhere. The turbo looks like it's installed correctly.
I checked the boost on the turbo tonight via my OBD II scanner (figuring I could deduce a leak if I get weak boost). I get about 17 PSI of boost, which stays steady and strong even across gear changes. This seems pretty darn good.
It occurrs to me that maybe the turbo was not operating as well before and now is so tight that the wastegate needs to open. Any opinions on the feasibility of this???
Just wondering what typical boost numbers are for ~'99 Powerstrokes with NO CHIP installed.
Thanks for the info.

That boost level sounds like its correct. My suggestions:
1. Check all the intercooler connections, including the ones from the crossover tube to the intake.
2. Check the exhaust manifolds, these tend to either come loose, or not get tightened properly. Not so much at the block, but coming up to the turbo. Also check the exhaust after the turbo.

>Just asking.... Why did they have to remove the engine to
>R+R the rear seal?
Excellent question. They didn't have to remove the engine to do the rear seal, but it's very hard to tell if it's the oil pan or the seal that is leaking. They thought it was the oil pan but when they got it out they saw it was the seal. The tech said he'd have pulled the tranny instead if he had been able to tell it was the seal beforehand.
Either way I got a good tech (very rare) and he did a beautiful job. Had the turbo looked at and no problems found. I have a late '98 build '99 model year with a slightly smaller turbo than the ones used after September '98. Thus my stock boost is a little lower according to the tech, around 16 PSI. He said if I'm really getting 17-18, I may be opening the wastegate. In any case he said I'm getting all sorts of air.
Thanks for the reply.

boost pressure
I have a 2001 F350, 7.3 PS.
It never got over 14 lbs of boost at stock and now I have installed an Edge Evolution that I run at "Tow" mode all the time. I also have a Zoodad mod and Napa filter mod.
Other than that all is stock.
My maximum boost has never exceeded 15lbs.
Everything else has increased, ie, throttle response, power, and fuel mileage really jumped up.
I will do the exhaust soon but still wonder about the boost pressure.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

what is the stock turbo boost on Ford 2002 7.3L PSD. 17-18 pounds?
with high flow air cleaner, 4" MBRP exhaust and a mild tune should it be about the same.
the reason I ask is because I am intalling a gauge. I guess a 0-30 dial should be plenty.
on my old 6.9L with ATS turbo, the recommended setting was not to exceed 8.5 pounds.
thanks!
