paint question
i know this isnt a paint and body forum, but i want a correct question from
mid-fifty owners not someone who painted a 99 ranger. i'm getting close
to painting my 53 how much paint is it going to require. i'm hopeing one
gallon will do the exterior and under a quart will do the firewall and interior.
thanks....

I think that may be a little low. But, I believe it also depends on the paint. I painted my 55 ford Fairlane. It took about 3 quarts for the bottom color which was, I believe enamel, and it took about a pint for the top color which is metalic with a clear coat second. Remember the inside of the bed uses up a lot and what about inside the cab. Extra is good, because you don't want to risk a remix for a second batch. Good luck, John

If your going with a urethane type paint, a gallon of the color when mixed with the hardeners will yield 1-1/2 + gal. of mixed paint (depending on the ratios of the additives of your desired paint). I have been told that should be enough to paint my 55 F-100, but I am leaning toward getting a gallon and a half, just in case I have to re-shoot a screw up or two.
I would also be interested in the input of others before I buy.

A gallon would be a miracle unless you are using a base/clear. You are a better man than I if you can assemble without screwing something up so I always plan on a little extra for later. I'm not telling how much paint I used but I would count on your estimate of 5 quarts of urethane, enamel etc. Depends on if you are going body color on the hood underside, inner fenders etc.

I just painted the cab and front fenders and hood on my f600 using a base coat clear coat. Inside and out took 1 gallon. I had a couple of resprays and I use a HVLP gun, more paint on the truck less in the shop. Always buy more than you think you will use, especially if it is a custom color or metallic. Remixes almost never match spot on.
