more headache than i paid for
well if you all read my post "new truck" you all know about my recent purchase of the 72 f-100 4x4 with the 360 and a 4spd that is in great shape....well the truck is turning into somewhat of a headache. so far this is what i have foud by decoding vin#'s. i knew the truck was set on a different frame on the initial purchase, but i didnt know what year and such so with a little decoding i found this out: the title is for the body ie: 72 f-100 2wd with a 302, and from what i can scrape together the frame, running gears, and motor are from either a 76 or a 77 f-150 4x4. so i realy do have a half breed truck on my hands. what started all of this is i need new rotors up front for the disc brakes to have the truck pass inspection and as i found out a 72 4x4 truck didnt offer disc brakes, disc brakes wernt offered on a 1/2 ton 4x4 truck untill 1976. so this is turing into a bigger headache than what i bargained for....but i still like the truck

as long as you know what you got it aint to much of a head ache try these on for size
my high boy front pionion seal wouldn't seal I took the old seal in and they gave me the match for the # on it but it would leak so I took the yoke in to get the seal and guess what somebody put a 1/2 ton yoke on my 3/4 ton highboy
or
My dodge hehe I'm guilty on doing this I run 76 with 84 running gears the front drive shaft is out of a chevy so I have to buy specail U-joint that have dodge end on one end and chevy cups on the other end.. the back runs a dodge cap on the yoke and a chevy 1 ton cap on the other end
thew best is my ford has two differnt size cup on the rearend one size is a 3/4 ton the other is a 1 ton
try this I have a Z-28 I put a 403 olds in try going to autozone and tell them that they scratch there head... you just need to remember what year motor drivetrain you have

nothing wrong with it at all 460429 my view on everything is if it runs and goes thats all i care about and if you saw 1/2 of the trucks i bought you would know what i mean....rusty and ugly never bothered me i accually kind of like them that way....you dont have to worry about scratching the paint

You think thats bad.. My 73 F-100 is a 78 Cab/front clip, 77 Bed and Frame, 73 Title, 72 Motor, 78 4spd tranny... Its got alot of differnt stuff combined.. it seems like its hard to not find a truck that hasnt been riged some.. my 78 4x4 has a HUGE piece of Angle iron as one of the rear shock mounts..

This thread sounds like Darwins theory applied to automobiles.LOL
If it makes you feel better there is a '72 for sale down here, 390 4X4 with an auto trans. Nothing special, dude wants $6000 for it. Of course the cab pockets need replaceing and the seat is ripped and the power steering is leaking and.........
Well that shoud brighten everyones day.

You should be happy you now have an FE instead of that wimpy 302! There were no FEs put into anything in 1977 so you most likely have a 76 frame then. The drum brakes could have just been converted over with the parts from a 76. How do you know its the wrong year frame. I think there are differences between the two but I don't know what they are.

when i bought the truck the guy told me that when the truck was rebuilt they dropped the body on a new frame but he didnt know the year or what type of truck after i pullled the vin# off the frame and decoded it i found that it is for a 76 f-150 4x4 w/360 and the title is for a 72 f-100 2wd w/302...so a little # crunching helped me find out what i was working with
