How many kinds of c-6 are there?

Will all C-6s bolt up other C6 engines? I was wonderinf if a 1990 C-6 trans. would work on a 1967 352 engine. I found a c-6 out of a 1990 4x4, would it work??

No, you need a C6 with the FE bellhousing bolt pattern to do that. The one you found would be either the small block or 385 series (460) pattern.

The C6's last year of produciton was 1979. You must be thinking of the E40D which was the replacement for the C6 in heavy duty trucks, was electronically controlled and had an overdrive. I doubt that you can use the OD out of the E40D beause the cases are different. You can however swap the lower gears (1st and 2nd) from the E40D into the C6. If you want an overdrive for the C6 you will have to go aftermarket. Gear Vendors offers a C6 overdrive that bolts to the back of the C6. It's something like $2500 though and would require a shorter rear driveshaft. I'm just waiting to hit the lottery before I do this. It should work for any of the C6s of which there were three: smallblock, FE and 335/385 series. All used different bellhousings.

The C6 went a lot later than 79. Sorry I don't have the exact year it was dropped. But yes, if it is indeed a C6 with an aftermarket overdrive unit on it, you should be able to bolt it onto an FE C6.

The last C6 was built in July, 1996. That article is wrong.

OK, if the C6 was made after 1979 and I'm wrong I'll freely admit it. All I ask is that someone provide something other than their opinion. It would help me a gread deal. Here's other references: http://www.tlc4x4.com/2000/Parts/tlc_fordtrans.htm, http://raceabilene.com/kelly/hotrod/trans.html I don't post these to prove that I'm right but to point out that if the C6 was made after 1979 then there is a lot of misinformation out there. Actually, now that I think about it, I seem to recall seeing a C6 in a 1990 van. Somebody help me!!!

Ill say there is a lot of miss info out there!

(C6) "The bellhousing and case are intrical (one piece); therefore, the C6 has 3 different casings. This transmission was used in vehicles 1968 to 1979"

(C6) "Made from 1966 - 1979. 20" long overall including integral bell housing 1966 - 75 have rectangular pan with 17 bolts & long measurement on front and rear edges..."

C6 1966-96 http://www.transmissionkits.com/dome...ission-kit.htm

Now i dont even know when the started making them OR when they stopped...

All I can say is that my '92 F350 came from the factory with a C6 in it, which it still has. Like alot of other people, I would very much like to have a Gear Vendors OD for it, but don't have the cash for brand new one. Did you ever find out if you have an E4OD or a C6 with a Gear Vendors? The Gear Vendors will be a seperate transmission that bolts on the back of the C6, if it's a 2wd truck, or on the back of the transfer case if it's a 4wd truck. The E4OD has all the gears in one case.

If you can get a picture of the pan and post it here, someone can tell what it is.

Indybroncoman, my proof is a friends 85 pickup that has always had a C6 in it. Perhaps the C6 was last used in passenger cars in 1979.

bigwhtbco, it would make sense to put it in front of the transfer case, but that is not the way Gear Vendors does thiers. US Gear does thiers in front of the transfer case, but you have to move the transfer case to the rear to fit in thier OD unit. With the Gear Vendors, you just shorten the rear driveshaft. It has a lock-out on it to prevent accidentally shifting it into OD while in 4wd so you don't accidentally grenade your t-case. The idea is that you most likely don't need overdrive in 4wd, so there really isnt a reason to go through the hassle of re-mounting the transfer case to squeeze the OD unit in between.
