1968 F250 Rear End

What Rear End do I have?

It is not a Ford 9" is it?

How easy is it to upgrade this rear end to limited slip?

Is there a rear cover that bolts on or is it smooth?
If it's smooth it's probably a 9 inch.
If it bolts on you just might have a Dana 60.

It is a heavy duty rear end. You have to pull the axles to get the rear Drums off. Kind of a PITA. The rear cover bolts on.

Is this a Dana 60?

What is better?

How tough to go limited slip?

If you have the heavy duty rear, it is not a Ford 9". In that case, the switch to limited slip is much harder, but not difficult. There are tons of companys that supply what you need. Putting the guts in and adjusting pre-load in a Dana is not trivial. If you don't want to try it, I'm sure that there are shops around you that will do it.

F250s have the Dana 60.

There are many lockers and lmiited slip diferential upgrades available. But, there may be fewer depending on how many splines are on your axles.

My 69 F250 dana 60 with 4.10 gears has 16 spline axles. About all I could easily find was detroit soft locker at 4WheelParts.com, it's a great part but cost about $550 plus $260 to install.

GTex,

You are killing me. That is depressing. My wife is going to leave me.

I am going to have to think about this. I just dropped a 428 in my truck and I can hardly keep from spinning that one lousy rear wheel.

Maybe drive with a lighter foot? Then in a few months you can buy a posi with the gas money you'd save.

I just got my 390 going and can't wait (Ha!) to see my gas mileage.

I pulled out the Fuel Efficient 390 with a 2bbl because I don't care about gas mileage.

I will agree wih you. I ran a 390 in my T Bird and got close to 18 mpg. I put this 428 in the T Bird and could not get over 12. Maybe it was me.

I can see where things are going with this truck. I am going to have close to $10,000 in it if I am not careful.

Remember a truck is a SYSTEM! All of the parts have to be designed to work together or you will end up with an inefficient vehicle with bad fuel mileage and driveability problems.

Eric, I don't think anybody who goes through the trouble and expense of installing a 428 into his '68 is too worried about mileage and driveability. My 390 runs like a bat out of hell and only has 1,000 miles in 4 years, but I still contemplate installing a 428 every time I drive it.

You are right!

Mileage is not my main concern. Power is!
I like the idea of a system, but it is hard to justify the expense all at once.

Paint, FPA Headers with dual exhuast, new Rear End and wheels/tires could get expensive.

I think I like the idea of concrete. Maybe a couple stock 2bbl manifolds would work also.

Just don't be like a lot of these guys and come back whining about gas mileage later You would be amazed at how often that happens after someone puts in gears or a cam/carb etc etc that is not matched up. Check in the engine forums if you don't believe me.

Have fun!

That is funny. I gas mileage is a concern, Ford Trucks are probably not for you.
