bell housing bolt pattern

can I get a 5 speed out of a 1 ton with a 351 4x4 and put it behind my six? the reason being, I would like to have a granny gear, and not lose my overdrive. I just dont know if the bellhousing is the same.

YES, the bellhousing is the same on a 300 and a smallblock. As long as the 351 is a Windsor, which is most likely, and not a Cleveland (big block) you've got no problem. Other than the 5-speed might be a different length, making a new driveshaft come in to play.

One problem with your information...the cleveland has a small block bolt pattern. Just food for thought.
Edit: it will work, just need a flywheel for a 300.

The Cleveland does? Sorry about that, I had it mixed up with the 351M.

Is your truck a 4x4 too?
2wd and 4wd transmissions are different. 2wd transmissions have a bolt-on yoke or slipyolk, 4wd transmission just have a spined outputshaft for the transfercase.

That tail housing comes off and you can make it work with either. At least that's how it was on mine.

Lil' bit of info

A quick rundown on Ford Bell Housings.
The [early '80s] V-6's, Straight six's, "90 DegreeV" Small blocks [221/260/289/302/302 Boss/351w], 351 Cleveland,351 Boss, all use small block housing. {Not real sure about the "new" 289/Cobra, but would assume that they do.}
351M/400[Tall block Clevelands, ], "FE" famliy [332/352/360/361/390/391/406/410/427/428], "385 Family" [429/429 Boss/460] all use the big block housing.
As for the Four cyclinder engines of Ford, ain't got a clue. Hope this helps!

The FE family does not use the same bellhousing as the 385 family, Its differant. I dont mean to be negative, but I have built many FE engines, and they are not the same.

FE family uses its own bellhousing pattern

351m, 400 (other then a few rare 1973 400s with a SB pattern) 429, 460, 6.9L diesel all have the same bolt pattern.
with automatics they interchange perfectly.
351m, 400 can use a manual bellhousing from a 429/460.
Sometimes there is a problem when you bolt a 429, 460, 6.9L diesel to a bellhousing that was an original 351m/400 bellhousing. sometimes you need a 3/8" spacer plate to make room for the flywheel/clutch/inputshaft.

5 speed for a 1984 F2504wd

It may be in the posts above, but if it is there, I am not finding it. I have a 1984 4WD 300six in a F250. It has the stock granny 4 speed. Can I substitute a ZF trans to pick up a 5th gear to improve the mileage? Will ANY ZF 5 speed bolt in, or only those from specific applications? Thanks for any help. JimG

JimG: You can substitute a ZF for the T-18/19. The following engines have the same bell housing bolt pattern. 300-302-351W-351C. So you can pull the trans from a truck with any of those 4 engines.
