77 Crew Cab Gas Tank

Help! I Am Restoring A 77 2wd Crew Cab Short Bed. I Am Having Problems Relocating The Gas Tank. It Currently Has The In Cab Fuel Tank And I Want To Change It To The Rear Frame Mount. From What I Have Been Told A Factory Crew Cab Came With A 17 Gal. Tank. What I Would Like To Know Is Does Anybody Reproduce This Tank Or Does Anyone Know Of Another Tank That Will Fit. I Would Like The Put In The 38 Gal. Upgrade Tank If It Would Work. I Have The Rear Brackets Off A 73 F-100 To Weld In Place. If Anyone Has The Measurements Of The New 38 Gal. Tank It Would Help Alot. Thanks.

DW77 believe it or not a 35 gallon tank out of a 80-91 fullsize blazer will fit right in above and behind your axle between the frame rails. Yeah I know, I'm not givin ya any measurements (sorry man) but these these are pretty easy to find in salvage yards.

Try thease guys :http://www.aerotanks.com/
They are the only ones that I have been able to find (and Ive looked alot) that build a tank for the narrow frame which you have. About 28 in between the rails in the back. Its a 32 gal steel tank. I just ordered one for my 73 crewcab. Its $368.00 with a sender. Mine cost $451.00 shiped with tax and all but I had them set it up for a fuel injection pump in the tank.
The newer tanks will only fit the wider frame 34 in between the rails.
Hope this helps Leadmic

Will This Tank Use Original Rear Mounting Brakets That Are Welded To The Frame Or Does Aerotanks Provide Different Mounting Instructions? I Need To Find Out Before I Weld In The Tank Brackets Of The 73. Thanks For Your Help. Dw77

Hey Dw77, which brackets are you speeking of? Does ypur truck have one tank in the cab or does it have a second tank under the bed? If it has a second tank under the bed then you have the wide frame and many other tanks will fit. To make sure you need to mesure the distance between the inside edges of the frame rails. If it mesures 28in you have the narrow frame if it mesures 34in you have the wide frame. If you have the narrow frame their shouldent be any brackets. The areo tank comes with its own mounting brackets.

My Truck Only Had The In Cab Tank And It Does Have The 28in Wide Frame. I Have A 73 F100 With The Rear Tank Mounts That Are Rivited To The Frame Rails. I Thought I Might Have To Weld These In To Make Their Tank Work. My Frame Now Only Has One Crossmember In The Rear About Half Way Between The Rear Axle And The End Of The Frame Rails. Does The New Tank Brackets Bolt To The Frame Without Having To Remove This Rear Bracket? If You Can Let Me Know I Would Greatly Appreciate It. This Tank Problem Is The Only Thing Holding Me Up From Having The Frame Blasted And Painted With
Por15. Thanks For All The Trouble, Derick.

Hey Derick, the 35 gal tank wont work your frame is too narrow aiso the tank mounts off your F-100 wont work. The 32 gal tank I mentioned befor has a U channel made into it that your rear cross member fits into so you dont have to move it. Check with areo tank they will fax you a drawing with all the mesurements so you can see what Im talking about.
Once again the 35 gal tank mesures 31 in your frame mesures 28in also you will have to move the rear cross member as well as cut your frame rails down to make this tank work.

A Bronco tank (35 gal)will bolt right in where the rear tank goes in. You will need to weld in a rear support of some kind, but I have done this several times on 2 different F150 vehicles. Take it apart ,look at it and it will be obvious what is required.

No it won't, High boys have a narrower frame than than most ford trucks its 28 in to the inside of the frame rails. The bronco tank is 31 in wide. Most ford truck 73-79 have a 34in frame.

Yes they did and I misunderstood this thread I thought I was responding to a diffrent thread. ( I gess i should read the thread befor I respond to it)
My Bad. That being said all highboys were 4X4 and this truck is not and in 77 1/2 they changed from a highboy to lowboy 4X4 (IE narrower frame to wider frame). But this is a crewcab 2wd and crewcabs used the same narrow frame that the highboys did in both 2wd and 4wd crewcab and they also changed in 771/2 (narrower to wider). So I gess what we need to find out is how wide this truck is between the rear frame rails. If its 28in then the bronco tank wont fit and if it 34in it will.

Sounds like you know your Ford stuff.....I am a Ford fan/enthusiast, but not to the extent of someone such as yourself. Thanks for the info.
