Exclamation 2000 Ford Ranger 4R44E Shifting Issue

Hello, My buddy’s Ranger has a slight delay shifting into reverse or drive when cold, but more noticeably flares up in rpm when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd and kicks into gear. This happened after we took down the pan and bench tested/cleaned all the solenoids with a 12v battery. During testing, the EPC solenoid had some trouble engaging. So we took out the screw on the back and shot some carburetor cleaner through and then it started to click again.

The transmission has a new filter and is filled with Mercon 5. We tried running Sea Foam Trans Tune to see if it would clear up anything in the valve body, but not much of a difference so far.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

Check the band adjustment on the drivers side of the trans two locknuts 3/4 nut the rear one is hard to get to but it can be done tighten the bolt until you feel it slowing down or 10ft ibs turn each not out 2 turns if that dont solve it you got internal trans problem..

This vintage transmission had a problem of blowing the gasket out the side of the valve body. The location of the gasket problem determined the specific symptoms experienced. If you shine a flashlight around the edge of the valve body you can see if the gasket is sticking out anywhere. Any bits of gasket in the pan also indicates a problem. Ford had a TSB for the problem and a special separator plate with the gasket bonded onto it so it can not blow out. Mine was blown out on the front, but many seem to blow out near the reverse servo dohicky.
