Why the 6.0L ?

I am curious as to why Ford changed to a 6.0L? Especially when the 7.3L was such a good performing engine, why fix it when it's not broke? I guess I know it as the saying goes "there's no replacement for displacement." What is done to the 6.0L that makes them that much more powerful and why can't it be done to the 7.3L and have an awesome motor? I'm assuming they are able to get better fuel mileage out of the 6.0L and a little less weight due to the smaller displacement. If anybody has any info, feel free to share. I'm just interested in the reason for the change. I guess my biggest problem with the 6.0L is that they are too quiet!! More noise means more power!!!
Thanks guys!

#1 The 6.0 is a clean burn diesel that meets 2004 requirements.
#2 The auto manufacturers are not interested in selling you something that lasts forever, just until the warranty exp. ( 5 Yr /100,000 not bad)
#3 My exp. has been so far that the mpg is the same or worse then the 7.3 L.(May be due to FMC detunning by reflashing before I took delivery of the truck... sorry still a little peed about that)
#4 I might be wronge, but I thing the 6.0 weight is more than the 7.3.
I do have to say that in all I have have no problems with the truck and am very pleased with it's performance.

I came out of a 2000 F250 Lariat 7.3 to a 2004 F250 King Ranch 6.0....difference of day and night. My horse ranch gets consistently 2 MPG better, lots more power, trans that keeps the motor in the torque range at all times and a much quieter family vehicle. I really like the 6.0 and have had virtually no problems with it so far.

7.3 was a good motor but lacked power. They went to the 6.0 to beat the duramax in HP and torque and they did.

Does Navistar still make the 7.3L? WHen you use someone else's engine you got no choice sometimes.

I believe that's true, as well. The dmax was taking sales and a lot of press so Ford had to step up. It's too bad they didn't do more testing before rushing the motor to market, though. The early 6.0's have a lot of reliability issues.
