My truck always had excellent air conditioning. It got very cool very fast--no complaints. I recently had the engine replaced and they must have lost all the refrigerant and didn't refill it because now AC is same as vent. So I get a recharge kit from Wally World and hook it up to the low side service port and the gauge reads well in to the red, about 100 PSI. What the heck does that mean. My first thought was that it was connected to high side but I pulled out the service manual to verify I was hooked on low port. What color should the cap on the port be? This port was metal with a black cap. There was aonther "port" with a green cap but the port and threads are pastic. I tried hooking the gauge to this port but It didn't seam to fit well. I sure would like my great AC back. Any ideas???
Sorry, I didn't realize that my signature was no longer posting. The truck is: '99 F-250 SD Lariat, 4x4, V10, Auto, SuperCab.
My manual shows the low side being right on top of the Suction Accumulator/Drier. After further reading in the manual it looks like PSI on the low port can be anywhere from 50 to 450. Does this sound right? The manual that came with the guage I have says anything in the 100+ range is "Red" and considered problematic. I'm confussed
Man, I am too!
That sounds right... the dryer is always on the low side.
50-450 sounds insane!!!! Like 30-50 would sound normal to me.
Sorry, don't know about that truck in particular, but A/C is A/C and R-134 is R-134 whatever it is in.
You got 100 PSI with it running, compressor on?
It is important to know the differential pressure... this is where cold is made.
I made the check with it running and MAX A/C on high. I don't know for certain that the compressor was running. Maybe something is broke and I need more than a recharge.
Have someone cycle it on and off and see that the clutch engages... 100 PSI might be the static charge. Even if it has air in it the pressure will change when the compressor comes on.
You're gonna have to get a set of "Real" gauges on the system to do it right. If they opened the system up, it will need to be evacuated before recharging, and you should probably replace the accumulator/dryer while you're at it.
Make sure your Wally Mart R-134 DOES NOT have stop leak in it, or you'll ruin the system.
