I know this is a site for Ford lovers but through observations, its seems we own or have owned other Brand trucks as well.
Of all the vehicles Ive owned (which have been a few Ill list here in a sec.) my favorite and most capeable, besides my F150, was my 78 IH Scout II. It had the 345, 4 speed automatic( cant remeber the make) , an NP Transfer case, factory A/C that worked, and was plain jain utilitarian all the way.
It was also my most capeable 4wd I owned.
It also had typical Ih problems. Rustbucket, loose steering etc.
Bought it from an Airforce airman who needed a larger SUV (87 Grand Wagoneer ,Chrysler )
The wife and I enjoyed the hell out of it and drove it from Colorado to Pa the to Western NC in Dec 97.
Lo and behold on the way home from visiting a friend of my wifes in SC, we got caught in a blizzard. Needless to say but I must, we rolled it(she was driving).
Good things
Though she was pregnant the baby came out fine, He is now 5 3/4. The UV still Ran and landed on its tires after a roll and a half, I gave it an 8. ( This was topped when I rolled in a Humvee in Kosovo but thats a different story).
And my wifes broken wrist healed just fine.
Unfortunatly we had to sell it. Again different story.
The question is this How many of you have owned or own IHs of any type( Farmall tractors included) and what do you think of these dissapearing but capeable vehicles?
Also do you think CASE/IH should bring back the Light Line?
I stiil have the original owners manual for my beloved Scout.
My former and current collection of vehicles and in order.

Those 4-banger Scout engines were half of the IH V8 and were super strong little engines. I always liked the closed cab Scout pickup - hard to find now.
Dono
International was losing money hand over fist in the early 1980s and couldn't compete against the economies of scale of auto producers that produce hundreds of thousands of cars while IH put out about 25,000 Scouts a year. Along with the Scout went the IH pickups.
Originally posted by MrOldV8 I've got a Cub Cadet lawn tractor...Does that count? BTW, there's a Scout with a shiney blue-green paint job for sale near me for $8K...I think.
Depends on how new (or 'old') the tractor is!
For the last few years, they have been made by MTD (Bolens, Yardman, Yard Machines, White {the small lawn tractors, not the larger farm ones}, TroyBuilt, Cub Cadet).
It's hard to find a good Scout up here in the rust belt.lol.They were great for plowing snow though. The older ones around here are mostly yard trucks. The drive train was good but it was hard to get a sticker every year after they started to rust.
To fill a few blanks.
The slant four was literally cut in half 396 which if I remember correctly were dicontinued in 75 (396).
The small truck version os the Scout was called the Terra. It was designed to replace the full size line which was discontinued in 75.
Travelalls, which competed with the Suburban were also discontinued sadly in 75 and replaced by the Traveler which was a longer wheel based Scout.
The last year the Light line was produced, including the Scout in all versions, was 1980. The scout of that year could be distinguished by the Square headlights. The only other way to distinguish year of these vehicles was by the grilles (71-79).
A 4cyl Nissan Diesel was offered for 79 to 80 but never really caught on. There was a surplus of these engines when the factory closed in 80.
There was a prototype built for the future scout that was way ahead of its time that possibly wouldhave gone in to production around 85 or 86. Only one was made but it was too late to save the line. It may have been a good competitor against the Humvee.
There was rumored to be an 81 Scout produced and found in Mexico and South America but has never been comfirmed since IH and Navistar denied their existence.

i own a 1947 Farmall B that my dad learned to cultivate with in 1997 we did a slight restoration for the red power round up. I like the 70s IH pickups and met a girl whos father restored a 76 Scout for her to drive school.
heres the Sad reason they stopped making them and why theyre never coming back. IH was losing money fast just like jhemesc said, and the company that bought out Case in 1967, Tenneco bought IH in November 1984. So there is nothing left of Internationals automotive line execpt the heavy trucks. Im not sure if Tenneco still owns Case IH but i know they are now putting the OLD McCormick name on the 30-50 HP tractors.

Older ones were in fact IH.
Mine was made by MTD...still a tuff little tractor, though. I'd like to get some IH decals for it, just to show it's heritage.
Here are some old bumper stickers and sayings.
"SCOUT, EVERYTHING ELSE IS JUST A CAR"
"PLEASE ITS NOT A JEEP"
If you are looking for parts go to the scout web ring.
One that I bought parts from while stationed in Colorado was GIDDUM UP SCOUT. They can be pricey with some things but they are worth it.
They are on the web as well

Case IH is putting the "Farmall" name on some of the smaller tractors, but McCormick is a seperate company. Basically the same tractors as Case IH, but with Perkins engines instead of Cummins. It would have been interesting to see what International tractors would have looked like if they hadn't been bought out by Case. Its also too bad that the IH trucks and scouts were discontinued. Navistar could build one heck of a truck, if they took the old IH trucks and modernized them and installed Navistar diesel engines.
For some ancient history, I'm retired now. Drove semi's till the mid 70's. My first was a '57 I believe, International. Single axle, V-8. They put 3 different engines in, cannot remember the displacement, but it was the mid sized. Still have a picture buried somewhere. Leased it to Mayflower, haulin' bed bugs. Did that for about a year, got married, and started running the mid-west only. At that time the trailers were all single axle hauling furniture. That thing sure did a great job out in the mountains tho.
Talk about a bummer of an ending, I hauled steel and machinery after that, traded the IH for a Diamond T diesel. The IH was a good looking truck, and I had my name proudly displayed on the hood when I traded it. Didn't take the name off. Did not see it for years, several at least, one day going thru St. Louis, came upon a semi hauling scrap metal, had'nt been washed since they bought it, and my name was still on the hood. Don't ever do that. Leave personal items on a vehicle when you sell it.
