5.0 to 5.0 Swap

I have just changed my blown 5.0 in a 1989 Bronco with a 5.0 from a 1989 Mustang GT I used the intake and all the injectors along with the dist from the Bronco. But someone has just told me that the fireing order on the Mustang is different so what do i need to do to be able to use this engine? will it work?

If they're both 5.0 and the mustang has a different firing order then it has the HO firing order which is the same as the 351. If you aren't changing the cam then just switch the plug wires around to the proper firing order.

302 (1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8)
351 and 302 HO (1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8)

all you do is switch the plug wires for cylinders 5 & 4 with 3 & 7

But what about the injectors will the sequence be right? do i need to switch the injector wireing to match the fireing order. how does the injector know when to fire?

Bearee,

I think you'll be fine with your current injection. The trucks use bank (or batch) fire injection, as opposed to sequential fire in the Mustang. Bank fire actuates all the injectors (4) at once on one bank of the engine during a crank cycle and then the other bank injects on the next crank cycle. So there is not really an injection "sequence". The Mustang has sequential fire, in which the injection order mimics the ignition firing order, firing one injector at a time. This is controlled by the EEC of each vehicle.

Just change your ignition firing order as described above, pre-oil the engine and fire it up!

Done it!!

I just completed this exact swap with my 86 Bronco EFI. The fuel injection works just fine with the HO 302, just make sure the plug wires are routed properly for the new firing order. The FI doesn't seem to mind that the order is different. Be sure to get a distributor with a steel gear - the donor will have one already if you're getting a used engine. I love the extra power - it's still a truck, but from 35-70 it really moves!!

Bearee,

According to my book code 31/EGR Valve Position Sensor & 52/Power Steering Pressure Switch. I don't think either one of these would make your vehicle run that 'rough'.

Did you get the computer from the Mustang? Just a thought, they might have different preset numbers. I am not sure though.

Cheggie might have some more thought on this b/c he has done the exact swap.

Hmmmm,

Be sure to snag the distributor from the Mustang - they are identical, but the Mustang distributor has a steel gear. The cast iron gear on the Bronco dizzy will be destroyed by the steel cam in the Mustang engine. I bought a reman Mustang distributor for my Bronco, and it works perfect. The firing order for the spark plug wires will be the same as it was for the Mustang. You need to arrange the wires for 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Set the crank pulley up with TDC indicated on the pointer - the rotor should be pointed roughly at the air conditioner. If it's pointed toward the heater blower, you're 180 degrees off, and will need one more rotation of the crank to line up. This should get you close enough to start. The rotor is pointing to #1, so start there, and go counterclockwise in the firing order to install the plug wires.
You're right about the Bronco injectors and sensors - they are perfectly capable of running the HO. The Bronco computer is also fine for running the HO. In fact, a Mustang computer will only work if you do some serious rewiring to the Bronco harness - right now, concentrate on getting it to run! You'll get it!

Bearee,

Check to be sure that your EGR valve is not open at idle. Also double check your TPS voltage and make sure it is within specs.
There are numerous things that could be causing your problem.
Fuel pressure is another possibility.
