98 4x4 Ranger-Wont Go In ANY Gear !
I have a 98 Ranger XLT 4x4 with a manual transmission, About a week ago I noticed that it was making a noise when I pushed the clutch in. Sounds like a weird ratteling noise, then it would stop when I let the clutch out, other than that it shifts fine. Yesterday, While stopped at a light, I could not get it in any gear to move. Somehow I managed to get it in third and drag my way home. I was told it was the throw out bearing. I know some about cars but nothing about transmissions. I also dont have alot of money to spend, Is this something a 12 pack and a buddy could fix if its the problem. Is it harder because its 4x4? Please help!!!

"all you need to do is drop the tranny and change it."
Sounds simple, but it isn't. Atleast according to my manual it isn't. They say that, to remove the tranny, you'll need to remove the exhaust system, the starter (for clearance I guess), then front and rear driveshafts, and the transfer case. How many miles? Might as well put in a new clutch while your there, if you got the money for it anyway.
Check for the obvious first, fluid in resevior, etc. Do you still feel resistance when you push in the clutch? Or do you just feel a little bit of resistance from the spring and nothing else?
If the feeling in the pedal did NOT change, it's probably not the hydraulics. Good luck, hope you find an easy fix...

Sounds more like a pressure plate. If the throwout bearing failed (ie-locked up) it would make a lot of noise, but still push on the pressure plate. At least for a while, until the "fingers" failed. Either way, the transmission will have to come out. It's not too difficult in a shop with tools; a little tougher at a downtown apartment. I'd get two 12 packs and at least two buddies with some tools. Good luck!

I know this is an old post, but my truck just did the same thing. Rattling when pushing in the clutch at a stop and now I can't get it into any gear. I can put the truck into any gear when the engine is off, but not when it's running. It has plenty of clutch fluid and the peddle feels good.
Thanks
