Question Ch*vy Bench Seat Head Rest Removal

Esteemed colleagues as Fergie would open......

I swapped in a '94 Ch*vy Cheyenne Bench seat that has head rests.... . I'd like to remove the head rests.
Has anyone had experience with these seats and removing the head rests?

I've played with them for awhile and have not been able to figure out how to remove them without doing any damage.

LMK if you have some insight.

Also, I used to be able to grab smilies from the [Get More] section to the left but for some reason I've lost the abiltiy to do that today.... maybe too much time in the garage running back and forth through the cold to the house!!!

I just know fenders is waiting to see if I jump on this one. I will find out tomorrow and let you know how to do it. I haven't had to take that vintage apart as of yet so will go to the local lots till I find one and figure it out.

Yes Lynn, professionals are required by forum law to comment on all threads relevant to their occupational field. If anybody has any Howitzer questions, I'm on it. You handle the interior stuff and did you notice I just posted another interior thread by the way. This interior is fighting me absolutley EVERY step of the way. Turning out well, but not without pain. But I am going to whip it without getting ripped off again with your help.

Guys,
What I'm concerned about is doing damage to the seat back or if I cut the steal rod, I'll end up with small pieces rattling around in the seat back.

According to the exploded view at the local garrage the headrest should slide up until it hits the last detent. Push it back in just enough to get the flat spring retainer clips to come out of the detent slots. Then take two flat screwdrivers in from the back side and wedge them in under the flat spring retainers so when you pull up on the headrests the clips won't drop in the detent slots. You will find the spring clips towards the bottom of the ferrels that go through the backrest and they will be on the forward side facing the foam bun that creates the cushion of the backrest. Hopefully my description of everything is clearer than mud. Good luck. You won't have any loose parts rattling around either.

If I can remember right, I used a 'slim jim' (the gaget used to unlock car doors) to slide down the back of the headrest. I couldn't get a screwdriver down behind the headrest. Just pulled the headrest up enough to get the slim jim down into the slot and pulled up on the headrest and it popped right out.

That would be fine if it is a flat single post that holds the headrest but according to the exploded view I have for the Cheyenne seat there are two tubular posts and it is as I tried to explain.

How did you turn out in removing the headrests? I hate to give out bad info but would like to know if my theory was correct. It has been some time since I was called upon to take the GM seats apart.

Gear Up, Actually your advice was helpful, but it turned out to be even easier. There are tiny holes on the inside of each plastic receiver. I just had to get something small enough to insert and release the spring and voila, they are out!

Thanks again for the help
