Master Cylinder sealing gasket

MASTER CYLINDER cover gasket--74 F-100 4X4
Boy, I sure could use some help from you "experts" out there!! I have a 1974 F-100 4-wheel drive short box, and years ago, I replaced top cover master cylinder gasket with a new one (rubber diaphram type). Years later, time has come to replace the same gasket which now is leaking again (pits in the rubber surface) and I'm trying to find a replacement.
Problem is, my records show two different master cylinders for the F-100; one is the BENDIX unit and the other is the LOCKHEED unit. It seems *real easy* to find the gasket for the Bendix unit (Ford OEM part#D2AZ-2167-A--also available from Motormite/Help products as part #42069) but my truck has the narrower Lockheed unit and dealers no longer have the top cover gasket available and don't show it. There's about a one inch difference in width between the two master cylinders and it's impossible to trim down the wider Bendix-type gasket.
Is anyone familar with the idea that Ford used the wider Bendix unit on the 2-wheel drive and the narrower Lockheed on the 4-wheel drive? Am I correct in assuming this?
I have checked with places like Dennis Carpenter Ford (they have to have the OEM part number which I don't have) and LMC truck, but to no avail.
Any help in locating this bugger would be ***GREATLY*** appreciated. Sure hate to try and replace the entire master cylinder, especially since this one is in perfect working order!
If all else fails and I want to fabricate my own gasket, HOW IMPORTANT are those expandable diaphrams? If they're not there, what could happen? Thanx
