Rear End Fluid Change When Towing

Recently read at an RV Forum that up until some uncertain model year, you needed to change the rear end fluid if you were going to be towing. This supposedly applied even with factory towing package. I had never heard of this before and would appreciate some insight into this situation.

That's BS. I tow 5 to 6k per year, and haven't changed my rear end fluid. If you have the towing package, all you have to do is hook up the trailer and go.

If youi were using dyno lube yes, it's a good idea to change every 30K miles or so, depending on load and use. However, Expys with tow package come with syn oil and don't need to be changed under normal use. Maybe every 50K miles of hard use. My '97 came with lifetime syn oil in the LSD and towing package. It's given no trouble from front or rear and I"ve towed up to 7500lbs with it for a total of almost 90K miles.

I'm pretty sure "ALL" Expys come with same synthetic fluid whether they have tow package or not. The LS models have an additional additive to reduce friction.

I believe I saw that thread also talking about the differential. I think they were talking about older trucks/SUV's that did not come w/synthetic lube like they do today. The recommendation was to remove the dino and put in synthetic. Most new trucks, especially if they come w/a tow pkg, will already have synthetic diff lube.
