Trailer Light Wiring Harness

I've looked under my 1992 Ranger for the trailer light wiring harness, but I can't find it.The owner's manual says it's at the rear, beside the spare tire. Not there.I guess someone cut it off or something .Any other places I could check?

Let's say that it's been cut off,(which it probably has been),how hard is it to hook up a new one?I can get the kit at Wal-Mart,but what is the location of each of the wires that I'll need?I want it to be like it came originally instead of some cheap-o job.I just want the basic 4-prong flat plug with the left signal, right signal, brake lights, and ground wire.I know where I can get the ground lol.Ya'll get the picture .

Thanks ya'll.

It should be fairly simple. Are you 100% sure that your truck came with a wire harness? Look at the wireing that goes to your taillights. It should be attached along there somewhere. If not you may not have the factory towing harness. I think they make one at wal-mart that will plug in, or you can buy a universal one and tap in to your taillights, good luck

Thanks Peter.I'll check it out.I believe that it did,but I'm not for sure.If not,I'll check my Haynes Wiring Diagrams and see which wires I need to splice into .

If you don't find the stock connector most trailer places sell a "T" that fits right in the connector near the back bumper.

That connector near the rear bumper that you're talking about...Is that two plugs that come together and go to each of the two taillights?I noticed that connector this afternoon when I was trying to find my factory trailer plug.Doesn't look like my Ranger has one.I'll check with TSC and around on the internet for that "T" that you're talking about.Any idea what it would be called?

Well,I stopped by Tractor Supply Co. this afternoon and bought a wiring kit for my Ranger .I spliced into the wires and had it installed in less than 10 minutes.Very simple procedure.I installed a female because that's what I see most trucks with. The trailer usually gets the male as far as what I've seen.I put the male on my 5x8 trailer.Everything works alright except I don't think that I did my grounds just right.I sanded all the way down to the metal on the trailer and wrapped the ground wire around a bolt and tightened it down. But,on the Ranger,I sanded as much of the rust as I could from the back of the license plate mount and wrapped that ground around one of the mount bolts. All of the lights work, but the blinker is REALLY fast and it's not all that bright. But,when you unplug the harness from the trailer,it goes back to normal ...

Either way,I have a trailer light harness on my Ranger now and I'm ready to legally tow my trailer down the highway .

Thanks for the help and advice ya'll .

you need a heavy-duty flasher like the one four your four-way emergency flashers.

Depending on the type of light fixtures on the trailer, converting to LED lights would be a good idea. They take very little power, which will reduce the operating temp. of the headlight switch.
