My V-10 sounds like a diesel
I upgraded my truck from a wonderful 98 F150 V8 xcab to a new 2001 F250 V10 4x4 super crew in December. I now pull a horse trailer or I never would have gotten rid of the best vehicle I have ever had.
I have had two dealers try to explain why my truck sounds like a diesel when I accelerate over 2K RMP.
Gas used regular unleaded, current mileage 3600.
Dealer one - That is the way a V-10 sounds
Dealer two - That is a known exhaust issue and Ford will have a fix in the first quarter.
Does any one have this issue or know what the real cause is?

The noise you are hearing is probably exhaust flutter. Ford is delevoping a fix/ may already have one. Personally, as long as it isn't a rod knock, I would leave it alone; the less time in the service department the better. My 99 V10 makes the same noise; I don't walk away from the service dept., I run!
Good Luck!

Had same noise on my 2001 F-250 SD SB SC 4x4 5.4l. They put a new `y' pipe in. Sounds a little better but not much, does'nt look all that different either. If the fix is out for the V8 iI would assume it's also out for the V10. I found discription on another thread on this website or I would think that is just the way the truck is supposed to sound, like I said it really didn't change that much. Did'nt change nothing for the poor gas mil. Good luck.

I have a 2000 V10 SD Crew Cab 4x4. I haven't tried regular unleaded in it yet, so I'm not sure if its the same knocking sound as yours or not. When I use Shell Super unleaded no sound. When I use Shell plus, knocking sound only occurs with heavy acceleration over 3500 RPM. When using lesser name brand, knock occurs at over 2500 RPM. Mine just seems to be associated with the quality of the gasoline. Otherwise 6000+ miles with no complaints

I have a 2001 V10 and can tell a difference between regular unleaded and premium. No knocking with regular unleaded but premium gives me better acceleration (measured by seat-of-the-pants) and another mile per gallon. With premium Exxon or Texaco, I get 12mpg in mixed driving empty. I joined JC Whitney's carclub.com and save 10% on all gas purchases so I can run premium for the same price as regular unleaded.
