ok guys,i probably know the response im going to get but here goes, what if a guy found a real nice 96 F-350 five speed 4x4 PSD,that had blown up,would you, A-rebuild the PSD depending how bad it was. B-stick a reman PSD in it,or C-buy a reman IDI with turbo and stick in it.no i dont have this problem, was thinking about what i would do and wondered what some of you guys would do.

Spectramac is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE. Spectramac is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Depends on just how blown up it is.

I would put the PSD back in it. Reman or rebuild depending on the damage done to it.

My main reason for this would be the sensors on the engine that went to the computer that runs the dash.

Once upon a time I had a 89 Marquis that originally had a variable venturi carb that had three sensors/adjustments controlled by the computer.
The previous owner removed the V V carb and installed a regular carb. ( at that time the V V carb was 900 to rebuild )
Everything worked well untill the weather got hot. During hot weather you never knew when it would just quit running till it cooled down. Then it would start and everything would be OK till it got hot again.
I talked to one mechanic that told me the adjustments that were to be controlled by the computer were more for hot weater. Since the computer was unable to make the adjustments to correct the heat, it just shut it down.
Computers are strange things when they can not talk to everything they are supposed to be able to.

You know I used to want to drop a Cummin in The Enterprise because I loved their sound. But I seen a converstion a few weeks ago at a dyno meet. I was all primed and ready to see what was under the hood. Then when I popped my head under there. ARGH... A cummins lives under an International's address... My first thought was to yell and scream at the guy about what he had done...

Don't get me wrong the guy did an excellant job of doing the conversion, but it just was not right. Sorta like that purple ketchup Heniz put out for the kids... yes it tasted the same but...

Yeah I know, but look at Maddog, WOW!!!!!!

I don't think our IDI's (although Ken may disagree) are quite capable of that.

I dunno, if the 6.9 in the Ghost gives, I may give the 12 v a chance, then blow that one up, too. Hell, I may give one a chance anyway. i'm thinkin about puttin the 84 back together and dropping the Ghost's motor in her and puttin the Ghost up on blocks for a full restoration including a 12 valver.

12 valve would be fun, I would just like to see some of us IDI guys to try one and give an honest opinion. I have a 87 F350 from California, that has all new axles, the tranny will be new in a few weeks or so, so all is left is the engine, which I am sure is going to last alot longer, but man, they can make some great power out of the 12V. Just a thought that rolls across my mind if the ol 6.9 gives up.. Scotty

Another thought would be throwing a Dt466 in the truck, man that hasn't been done yet, and Travis would be happy because it is still an IH engine.. Sorry just looking around on the IH website.. Man, now you really have the wheels turning. Scotty

The DT466 would be nice, that would be a compromise, still IH, and still 6 cyl so the torque would be monsterous. I don't think my E4OD would like it much though... No matter how much folks complain about the E4OD I still stand firm to it's a good tranny, but that... that might be pushing it... I would say strapping a handshaker behind the DT466 would be the thing to do. Plus that way you get full power transfer instead of eating some up in the TC.

We had 5 tankers that were DT466's, ranging from early 80's to mid 90's. They were extremly strong trucks. Each had 2000 gals of water, plus a variety of firefighting equip., and could still get up and go, even in only high range (not using the 2 spd rear). Thats a lot of weight--water 8.3 lbs x 2000 gals + about an extra 1000lbs for equip + driver 2 pass + truck + steel tank body = a whole lot of weight.

Our only probs were they leaked oil A LOT, even the newer ones.

the dt466 is a great engine, ive dealt alot with the ag engines.with proper main. they run forever.had one in a 4386 with the ambac ip,had a ton of hours so we replaced it with a navistar dt466 rebuild with the bosch inline pump, wow what a power increase!that inline made a world of difference, makes me wonder what our IDI'S would do with an inline pump!ive thought about that swap to it would cool and be keeping it in the IH family.o yeah you can get em with intercoolers to!!!

That would be my biggest concern, where do we get power improvement things for the engines? I know the new ones are electronic, at least I believe they are and I would want to be able to get my greedy paws on that kind of stuff and it would be even better if they came non-electronic so it would be about the same as an early 12V Cummins. I am going to check into this more before I decide in what I am going to put in my old IDI's place when she gives up, which hopefully won't be for awhile. If any of you guys know anything about the DT466, I would really like to know or at least where to look.. Scotty
